I'm curious about cost and convenience for two from Union Station to Harpers Ferry for a section hike.

Anyone with experience?

Thanks.

Too bad the trains only runs late late afternoon and the bus takes over four hours.

If it works time wise. There is an Amtrk train that leaves Union station at 4:05 PM & gets into Harper's Ferry at 5:16 for the cost of $10. You will not get anything cheaper.

If you need to go in the morning rather than the evening, Amtrak and MARC only run one way in the morning, one way at night. The price is great: https://www.wanderu.com/en/train-tickets/us-dc/washington-dc/us-wv/harpers-ferry/ -- about 26 for two.

On the other hand, a one-way car rental is about forty dollars. https://secure.airportrentalcars.com/en-us/search/?pickup-location=Washington+-+Reagan+National%2C+DC+%28DCA%29&dropoff-location=Harpers+Ferry%2C+WV&pickup-date=04%2F27%2F2017&pickup-time=10%3A00&dropoff-date=04%2F28%2F2017&dropoff-time=12%3A00

Greyhound is about four hours -- for seventy miles or so. For two I'm not sure it is worth the cost.

Shuttles can be checked at http://www.appalachiantrail.org/home/explore-the-trail/transportation-options

For example:

ERU Services
Kearneysville, WV 25430
(13 miles west of Harpers Ferry)
(304) 724-2202
Airports: From/to Harpers Ferry to/from
Dulles ($128.50), BWI ($137.50), and
Reagan ($143.50). A.T.: Harpers Ferry to:
US 40 ($110), PenMar ($125), Front Royal
($130), Chester Gap ($145), Manassas
Gap ($145). Rates are for 1 or 2 people,
including tax. $7 EAP. At least 2-day
notice recommended. Rates subject to
change

For a large group (more than the two of you) https://fareharbor.com/hostelhiker/items/20993/

A broader range of areas served http://www.teahorsehostel.com/Shuttles.html -- especially for getting back to the airport from the trail.

I'm not sure that Uber is cost competitive for this particular trip.

It usually runs 1-3 dollars a mile.

I've only taken it home from Harper's Ferry. It's notoriously late going in that direction. I would think uber is not ideal. If it lines up, if it's on a weekend day I'd totally drive you out there. My kids love Harper's Ferry

Thanks for the input everyone.

Chickenfingers--makes me wish I was heading out on a weekend.

I think I'll try the one way rental.
