View Full Version : I feel very dumb

So I bought a hip belt pocket to put my phone and goodies in while hiking. It has a single non-elastic loop at each corner to attach it to my pack. I was planning on just sliding my pack's hip belt through the loops to secure it, but they are too small. When I inquired as to other options I was told that some people use simple shock cord style hair ties from CVS to tie/fasten the loops to the daisy chain on my pack's shoulder straps but I cant figure out how to secure the pocket with a hair tie that is a closed loop itself.

I feel dumb for even asking because i'm sure the solution is obvious to people who know knots. Anyone help me out? Is this even making sense?

I am not sure those are meant for hip belt pockets. I have these http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/beltpouch.shtml which go around the hip belt but also rely on having something for the ends to loop into. They are also good because they have some width to them which is nice.

Zip tie might work

Just tie a loop of elastic cord to the NON- elastic cord.

You can use hair ties, with no knots. It's hard to describe. Put half the hair tie through the non elastic loop. Loop the other end of the hair tie though the part you pushed through, and pull so that it's now firmly holding onto the non-elastic part. Now slide the large elastic hairtie loop over your pack belt straps.

Those look more like the ZPacks wallet that you stash inside your pack than hip belt pockets. Was that really the price for two pockets?

Ha no, that was the price for the pack above. It was $12.

This is sort of what I assumed they were referring to, but wanted to be sure there wasnt some special knot I was overlooking.

No problema. Many a good people have made such errors...:D

http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/beltpouch.shtml Could sew some toggles like ZP does.

Easiest way is to use Quick Attach Tri Glides as made by Gear Aid. They are sold at REI. https://www.gearaid.com/collections/parts/products/tri-glide-quick

See them in the pic of MLD's added on hip belt pockets that come with such an order.

These are also sold at big box HD type hardware stores. I bought a couple in stainless to attach a should strap to plastic O rings on a tennis bag. They are just a few bucks not the prices at these sites. Look for them where the wire, boat hardware, and key accessories are vended.

On that site these are called "Water resistant cuben fiber zipper sacks." So yeah, they don't appear designed for what you want. Which isn't to say you couldn't adapt them.

Just tie a loop of elastic cord to the NON- elastic cord.

That can work using something like a looped micro hair bungee found in the beauty supplies/hair dept areas of wally World. However, in my experiences it results in a sagging hip belt pocket. That's why ZP uses three attachment pts including a central one .

Honestly your better off using those for the intended purpose i.e. Fak, ditty bag etc..I had a similar situation with MLD when I bought the prophet. My BAP wouldn't fit into pouches. I bought a set similar to what you have but from MLD. They are very handy and keep stuff dry that you keep on outside of pack...and order a pouch that will fit your waist belt properly as wouldn't want to hang a heavy smartphone in the Cuban bag for a long duration...MLD or zpacks make what you want...how big a phone?
