That is a 240 mile stretch, any 240 mile stretch of the AT is going to have ups and downs.

Just south of HF is "the roller coaster" which isn't anything more then 11-15 climbs under 500 ft of gain in about a 10 mile stretch.

As far as trail quality 100 miles or so goes thru SNP which 90% of is very smooth sailing with a couple ugly spots but nothing crazy as far as rocks are concerned.

Once you leave the SNP you start running along the Blue Ridge Parkway for the rest of your trip. Passing it many times. The priest is along that stretch which is always labeled and is, a big climb up but I don't think it is overly rocky etc.

Maps- I would suggest getting the Guthooks App (http://atlasguides.com/appalachian-trail/) paired with an external battery recharger. (https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore-Ultra-Compact-High-speed-Technology/dp/B0194WDVHI/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_107_bs_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=M7F4X2AR37145M7408ET)

And as an addition to the app a pocketlight map of that section of trail. (https://www.antigravitygear.com/shop/pocket-profiles-guides-books/pocket-profile-appalachian-trail-elevation-profile-map/)

Anyone planning on spending a significant amount of time on the trail should pickup a guide book as well but its not something I carry while on the trip.

Hope this helps and enjoy your trip!

Recalling a slightly difficult descent south of the Three Ridges area, going down towards Tye River, and some boulder rivers to cross near Hawksbill in the northern SNP. Otherwise, yes, please enjoy the trails!

Regarding maps and agreeing with @Gambit -- Guthook will take care of map needs in Virginia. For those who profoundly distrust these devices (i.e. retired from the IT industry), PATC's excellent paper maps are available from REI or directly from the club at https://www.patc.net/store/. Cheapskates like me can also download and print workable backup maps from the USGS ESRI server at https://goo.gl/XFc127.

How does the ankle handle rocks, inclines and rocky inclines?

Humpback is steep and rocky. Three ridges is steep and rocky. Tye river is steep and rocky. The priest is even steeper...and rocky!!!

This 30ish mile stretch is a blast and packed with views.... but its not the easiest. Don't over plan daily miles heading that way

HikerBot is a free app for the AT that has offline topo maps and thousands of waypoints including shelters: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hikerbot.app
