View Full Version : Hammocking at Roan High Knob Shelter (and.... bears?)

I'm planning to join some hiker pals on a 3-day backpack over Mem Day. It includes an overnight at Roan High Knob Shelter.
I've walked around there on a day hike, but don't remember if there were good places for a hammock. Any hangers out there with suggestions?

And, posters on the Guthook app report a problem bear at the shelter. Anyone have updates/details on that?

Thanks.

Plenty of places to hang there. We had a "Cold and High Hang" there one January several years ago. About a dozen or so hangers.

The trees arent that tall but like mentioned, a lot of spots to hang.

Yes, plenty of good hammock spots. It can get pretty windy up there and the fog comes in thick.

Thanks for the info.
Anyone hear about the bear situation?

No worries. Bears can't survive at that altitude. You're good.

Bears survive at Clingman's Dome and that is the highest point on the trail.

Black Bears have been found as high as 9,800 feet.

Lol. Just checking to make sure that someone is paying attention.

Ouch.
Obviously my failed attempt at humor was lost in the Internet.
