On my thru hike I don't want to miss the Audie Murphy memorial. I just got Wingfoot book, Thru-hiker, which is a great help but I don't see a mention about how to find this memorial. I am told it is "off of the beaten path". Any one have the mile marker turn off and directions? Thanks, FiveWay

I don't have my book on me, but I had a Wingfoot last year and went up to the site. Were there signs? It's up a hill and I remember a bench before I got there, not a common sight. I also remember it's a short side-trip up a small hill from the Trail on a fairly well-worn path. I wish I could tell you the mileage, but I can't imagine you'll accidentally pass it up. Nice memorial and a good camping spot if you wanted to spend the night there.

Neo: I know Sgt Joe Hooper. I met him in Washington, DC. I was in Nam in 71 and 72. I also received a few decorations. Not taking away from Sgt Hooper, if you look at the Medal of Honor web site, Audie is still listed as the most decorated war hero. I love them both. They were true to their troops and their country. I am so sorry to hear how Sgt Hooper died. Our own country killed him not the enemy, so sad. Thanks for the info. Hope to walk a few miles with you some day. FiveWay

Five Way,

Your post mentioned it might be "Off the Beaten Path". My recollection is that it is only a few yards off the AT.

If you know the mile marker, just keep a lookout for the side trail to your left (if you are hiking north) It is just up the hill maybe 80 yards. Hard to miss if you are indeed looking for it. Worth seeing too.

You'll pass a small wildlife pond on your right (10 feet from the trail) just before the trail to the monument goes off to the left. A bench sits right in front of the monument which I think you can see from the trail. Can't miss it.

If that was the "expedition" in 1979, one of my old team leaders was part of the package you supported.
