This worked out as a really great first over-nighter for my kids (aged 6 and 11): http://hikingbob.blogspot.com/2017/06/rice-field-up-and-back-with-kids-first.html

That's one of my favorite places on the AT. Great spot to take kids for the first time.

Yeah, it's an underrated spot. Guaranteed a beautiful sunset/sunrise, unless it's really cloudy. Both mornings I've been there the valley has been filled with troughs of fog. It looks like an ocean. Really gorgeous. The water is a little sketchy but the spring (right on trail) .3 south of the shelter had a steady trickle. If I went back with kids and it hadn't been raining lately, I'd haul up a couple gallons of water from the car, just to be sure.

This year it was a first plane flight and first hike for my younger son. We hiked in Mallorca (Spain), it was memorable, and looks like both our boys enjoyed it too.

Mallorca is very picturesque and wild somewhere, with gorgeous sea and mountain views.
Some civilization: view from our apartment in Mallorca
