I drink instant coffee at home these days. Mainly tasters choice as that's what is cheap at Costco... not gourmet by any means but works fine.
I like Via very much and we drink it at home and on trail when we want a treat... but at about a $1.00 a cup it adds up.

This just popped up though in an e-mail from Amazon after a recent order:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00451UA5K/ref=pe_851270_240955280_em_1p_1_ti?th=1

A 1000 count box of these for 122.75 shipped (prime) is a thru hiker sized deal- but very cheap.
For those not sure of the brand or flavor there are smaller 80 count packs for $14.50 at a reasonable .18cents each.
This isn't "nescafe" caffeinated sugar hot cocoa mix for those like me who had that memory- it's real instant coffee- as oxymoronic as some of you bean fiends may find that :D

It's possible some of you western or southwestern folks can just dump some instant in a bag, but unfortunately humidity kills that idea and single serving packets seem to be the only solution I have found short of mylar sealing your own stuff.

PS- if you use amazon, please use Amazon Smile... I doubt it's a ton of money but the ATC is one of the charities you can contribute to and pennies pile up.

IMHPO $0.13 Tasters Choice is about $0.10 over priced. [emoji41][emoji106][emoji1]
The next time you visit Target look for the small box of 6 singles of Cafe Bustelo. Earlier this year they were $1.05 in east Texas. They might be stronger than you like. Adjust water to taste.

Bah... you just didn't put enough whiskey in it. It's right in the directions.

Is that a bit like Medaglia D'Oro? I didn't mind the taste, just thought I ended up using more of it than I should... but only tried it around the shop.

Or maybe I've just spent enough time destroying my coffee palette to deal with the cheap stuff.

I don't mind strong... I like the Italian Roast Via very much for that reason... "watered down" to 12 ounces or so it still makes a nice cuppa and I don't feel like I need to use 2-3 packets.
I didn't get that sense with Shug's favorite; though I suspect he just enjoys saying the name in his videos.

I like tasters choice crystals on vanilla ice cream, and black pepper.

Bill,
I had the same conclusion about the Italian instant espresso.
The Cafe Bustelo is about the same strength as the Via Italian. I stocked up on Via before I found the Cafe Bustelo. I'm saving the Via Italian for special occasions.
For a buck it's worth trying.
Cheers!

That does sound pretty good actually... maybe a little drizzle of Chambord if'n yer feeling fancy.
Reminds me a bit of my dark chocolate, asiago, and fresh strawberry combo that folks give me the stink eye when I suggest they try it.

That goes without saying... but still fun to say.

I'm sold... I'll give it a shot.
I will say the Italian tongue twister seems more likely to hold up in bulk form than traditional instant coffee on the trail. I'd like to get away from all these little packets...

I do use a bombilla (filter straw) for the occasional yerba mate blend or course ground coffee and that's not a bad system either for a nicer blend... but hard to beat the fresh flavor/quality of the single serve packets.

Anybody ever try putting coffee beans in a pepper mill?
Just a random thought that popped in my head as a relatively light way to grind em fresh on trail.

Maybe if your grinder can produce a coarse grind? Otherwise, I think you'd be looking at what amounts to an espresso grind.

Course grind yar...

I've got a couple of these- https://www.walmart.com/ip/Yerba-Mate-Tea-Bombilla-Gourd-Drinking-Straw-Filtered-Cooper-Nickel-Gaucho-M26/112740054?wmlspartner=wmtlabs&adid=22222222222060930403&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=e&wl1=o&wl2=c&wl3=10393723274&wl4=kwd-1105736961733&wl12=112740054_10000000632&wl14=bombilla%20straw&veh=sem

Not this model but close enough. There is another type with a little filter (like a teaball) on the end but that lets stuff through. This spring model works pretty good with just about everytype of loose tea I have used.

I haven't messed with it for coffee but thinking it should work well enough.

It would take a very long time to grind enough for a cup of joe.

Are you trying to imply that this entire thread has principally become pointless random speculation by an individual stuck at his desk, bored out of his mind, and in desperate need of a hike?

Taster's Choice actually tastes pretty good - almost as good as Via. The aroma is nowhere near as good, and aroma is a major component in the "taste" of coffee. But they are closer than they appear at first smell. And the price difference - and the fact you can get the little tubes of TC at almost any small town grocery - make them good for a long hike.

I got quite a supply of nescafe packets.
They seem to worship it in middle east. 2 per day x 3 month hotel stay=.....

Also some nestle quick packets. More useable.

For $12 you can get 72 packets if you don't want to buy a thousand of them...that comes out to 17 cents a packet:

Old thread, I know but my local grocery store has 7 packs for $1. Just over $.14 per pack. Smaller quantities.
