Planning on doing a week long hike in mid September somewhere around the smokies. This will be my first trip to the AT so if anyone's is going to be in that area let me know. Would like to meet up or get some good advice on where to start and finish.

on the advice front; it should be possible to do the National Park (76 miles, Fontana Dam to Davenport Gap) in a week. You'd have to get a backcountry permit from the Park but that can be done on line. The Visitor Center at Fontana Dam has free showers and a big parking area if you can arrange to end your hike there. North of the Park, from Davenport Gap the Trail goes over Max Patch (nice views) and through Hot Springs NC. Lots of hiker services (stores, restaurants, hostels, laundries) in Hot Springs.
South of the Park, between the Georgia line and Wesser the Trail was impacted last year by the wildfires. I know the maintaining clubs have been working to address the damage but I'm not familiar with exact status; check the ATC website or some of the other forums here for details.
Good luck!

Thank you for that input. Fontana is looking much easier to get to than my original plan.
