Important on high ridges and meadows (eg. Grayson Highlands, last week.) Also, don't forget sunblock.

I just got some sunglasses for the AT, and tried them out on a couple local hikes with and without my sun hat. They're sized for kids, but work for me because I've got a small head. In this small size they weigh less than 1/3 of my glass lens Ray-Bans. (Plus they're $2 sunglasses instead of $200.) If I don't use them they'll end up in a hiker box.

When I was young and dumb I never wore them. Now as I am older and wiser, always.

I'll be happy to show you my scars.

UV protection now or slice and dice later.

I had nitro methane sprayed into my eyes several years ago had to switch from contacts to glasses for awhile. Two years later my eye doctor said I could switch back to contacts. Since then I have worn sunglasses practically year round. Even my safety glasses are tinted a little.

I brought some nice sunglasses. Wore them just a few times. About a month later I found that they were broken from being in my pack. If you think you need them then bring cheap ones. I wear sunglasses all the time otherwise. I just didn't need them on the trail after the leaves grew in.

Brought a pair of Oakleys I had owned for ~10 years. Ended up barely using them because of the green tunnel. Lost them and didn't notice until the next day when I was actually out in the sun. I know exactly where I lost them but I wasn't hiking back at that point.

Bring cheap if you bring some.

Hiking is the only time when I don't bring sunglasses.

Nice to have sunglasses and or visor. A hike is not just about hiking or necessarily always being on trail.

I get my stiches out in 9 days.
Will have a nice 2.5 inch scar, but chicks love scars.

LOL! In that case, I should be a hit with the ladies. 4"+ on my left forearm where the malignant melanoma used to be.

I also wear my sunglasses on the trail to protect my eyes from low hanging limbs that the person in front of you let fly back with no warning.

Could be, could be. Or it may just an a**hole in front of you. I only get hit once then I back up a few feet.

FWIW - I bring both regular and sun glasses (both Rx) with me anytime I go out and wear the pair best suited for the day. I have a hardshell case to protect the pair I am not wearing from damage, which pretty much eliminated accidental breakage in the pack. I do tend to like the eye protection they afford from tree branches, insects, and other surprises that can find their way into an eye along with the reduction of reflected UV they provide.

If you need them , then by all means use them. Who cares what others do?

I would put it this way: if your skin out is more than 20 likely yes - less than 20, other things would be higher priority

Alough they don't need to be dark sunglasses or set tint lenses it might be nice to have eye wear/sunglasses to keep the gnats from committing eye suicide.

I bring sunglasses. They double as spare prescription glasses, without which I'm blind as the proverbial bat. I have smashed my glasses in a fall before.

As much as possible, I try to keep UV light out of my eyes. This means I always wear a visor and UV-proof lenses.
This is because I have two goals concerning cataract surgery:
1) I want to live long enough to need it. ALL HUMANS will either get cataracts as they age, or they will die. The only thing you can control to slow down the former is your ocular exposure to UV radiation.
2) I want to wait till I'm in my 80s before I have it. Yes, intellectually I know it's very routine & quick surgery, but the thought of eye surgery gives me the willies. I don't even like my daily eye drops, but I know I need them.

I don't wear sunglasses, as glare doesn't bother me. But I MUST keep UV light out of my eyes.

According to a recent NYT outdoor article you need $300 sunglasses if you're consuming "gourmet" trail food.

I wear glasses full time. Did not like the switching back and forth from reg to sunglasses so bought some transissions (sp?). They change well except for bright sun on new snow!
