I am going on a day hike up to McAfee knob in September. I have take the AT through this section before, but I understand you can also take a fire road part of the way. Anyone done this? Comments? Shorter? Easier? Thanks

if you're just going up and back, it makes sense to take the fire road part of the way just for variety. On a busy day it can be pretty crowded on the trail, and it is more comfortable to be on the wider fire road. I've done that walk as a day hike, and enjoyed being on both the AT and the Fire road to complete the loop.

This. The fire road is a nice walk.

I went up the AT and down the fire road. Wanted to see both. Not sure it makes a huge difference. Road is easier.

Time is about the same either way. I frequently go up one and down the other just for variety. Road is a bit gentler because the grade is more consistent.
