This is an artist's rendering of a proposed "skywalk" extending over the South Rim of The Grand Canyon to be built on the Hualapai Indian Reservation adjacent to Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park:

Yes, this is an 'urban legend' site. But Snopes claims it's true. It's supposed to open around June 2006:

Where are all the protest now?
Surely someone is offended.
If you can't levitate in a natural state then why should I suffer your inability with this eyesore that will cause more traffic, coke machines, etc as folks beat down the world as we know it to get there. The negative impact will surelybla,bla,bla,bla............................

and if you are ever in the area an awesome hike is to the Havasupai Falls...we did that hike after a down and up at the GC, the Havasupai hike will take you to their village whose post office is still served by donkeys, the falls are the most spectacular i have ever seen-this after 10 miles of heat and sand, def. an oasis....the only problem with the village is that the villagers dont like whitie, of course they gladly take your money to camp on their land.....

I'll help build it... if we can put a trapdoor floor into it which is triggered to open every time it hits capacity.

i second this hike. and the "trail" down to the Colorado from Supai is well worth the long day's hike.

I'll third the hike. The hike is from hualapai hilltop to Supai. Then about 2 miles on down the trail there is good camping, just past Havasu Falls. I spent a week there, and loved every minute of it. I would love to go back...

Isn't this where Ed Abbey told his friends he'd be back in an hour but didn't come out for 2-3 weeks?

Does he mention this story in a book or short essay?

I think the story being referred to is likely:

In the short story called Havasu in Desert Solitaire, Edward Abbey talked about his trip down to the Supai and around the Havasupai reservation. His friends said they would wait while he walked down there but when he returned five weeks later, they had gone on to Los Angeles without him.

The Hualapai, where this Skywalk is located, is another reservation fairly close by:
