View Full Version : Tarp dying/sharpie?
Hey guys. So i've got this awesome MLD cuben trailstar that I absolutly love. However, i have been getting rather tired of the bland white color. I was wondering if any of you have ever tried dying or drawing sharpie on cuben, or what your thoughts on the idea. Would love to make some sort of super colorful art on it. Seems like sharpie would be easiest and be more detailed, but I worry about the durability .
On a side note have you seen this super awesome YAMA tarptent? This design is awesome!!

That's different... a Starry Night Trail Star. I find it creatively energizing. I like the non redundant topic. That's one cool Trail Star. Indelible Sharpies on cuben, huh? I'm awaiting comments...maybe from one eared artists. :D :banana

Try on an obscure corner first.
Educated guess: The Sharpie ink may flake off the slick cuben stuff.

I know this is regular fabric..... but regular sharpies don't do well on standard fabrics
If they don't work well in a test, maybe try those laundry sharpies

The problem with Cuban is a total lack of fibers or "tooth" for the ink to bind with.

I can't believe that by now someone hasn't chimed in that has at least tried to mark their name on some cuben gear with a sharpie. I know that's just about the first thing I'll do when I get my first piece of cuben gear...figure out how to put my name on it
......I guess that comes form having young kids and so we put names on almost everything that can be confused with someone else's stuff when out and about....

Regardless, that's a lot of surface area to cover with a Sharpie! Hope you have some serious time to kill. Draw on the inside while waiting out rain?

That could be a great long-term project. Add a small drawing here and there to commemorate places, milestones, and moments on your hikes, have other hikers from your trail family autograph or sketch on it, keep a running list of campsites or trails hiked. Pretty soon it will be infused with memories and style.
I'm thinking that a thick Sharpie could be used to make some cool tree limb camo on my Duplex.

A few years back there was a hiker/artists? here who started a thread stating (she I believe) had come up with a way to dye sill-nylon (iirc) and was planning on making custom designed pack covers and other goodies. I looked for the thread once but couldn't find ...it's around here somewhere.

I'd be wary of any using any solvent near expensive fabric. From the Sharpie site.
The principle solvents are alcohols, but they also contain ethylene glycol monobutyl ether. All other Sharpie ink colors are Permchrome ink. For these the principle solvents are also alcohols, but no glycol ethers are used.

Love that tarp picture the OP posted. That's awesome. I'd be snapping away with a camera if I saw that at a campsite.
best thing about this new medium is that the cuben is likely translucent enough for you to trace artwork through, especially if you make a make-shift light box with a piece of plexi or glass. work done this way can make you appear to be the most skilled of artists! i've done similar work on super big custom kites in the past.
