Hey I just noticed that the Companion states the official length is 2174.6, not 2175.6 like the data book, so I took a look at the databook count... If you add up all of the sections it is 2174.6. But in their summary table at the beginning it lists an extra mile. Found the error, they seemed to add a "phantom mile" (math mistake) in the last section (nobo: ME line to Baxter Peak; sobo: fontana Dam to Springer). So, the official length this year appears to be 2174.6 + 1 phantom mile.

I believe that phantom mile is going to be the toughest.

Of course, that raises the question: "If you haven't hiked the phantom mile, can you rightfully claim the 2000-miler patch?"

That's the one you got to do after dark.

Actually I think that you probably do that phantom mile in your dreams, again and again and again...

Could be the toughest mile of the Trail for O.C.D hikers. They keep looking for it, but can't find it.

Perhaps this is a lesson for the obsessive types out there. Set the bad parts of the obsession behind....it's just deadweight.

You won't find this mile, so hike the ones you do find and be content with them.

if i hike the phantom mile, can i do it supported and get my phantom patch?maybe that mile is like the twilight zone.if you hike that mile, then you go into the alternate reality AT,and in this reality, all shelters are like the hilton, streams run with beer, wingfoot has never thru-hiked,bryson never wrote a book, and evil spock has a goate....

The patch is a rara avis. It's a four dimensional design, woven from phantasmo fiber with translucent lettering.

The certificate is printed on flash paper, in the Burning Man font. It ignites when you take it out of the envelope.

So it is settled. Someone needs to design a "Phantom Mile" Patch/Logo!
Possible Slogan...

"I even hiked the part you can't find... and you call yourself a purist."

Last year I relocated a small section I maintain around a wet spot adding about four to six more feet to the section of trail I maintain. Also just north of Piazza Rock shelter I relocated another section around an upturned stump and this added at least three feet. I have not reported these re-locations to the ATC so their mileage is not accurate.

When is it every going to stop? How come it always has to get longer and longer? Just think of how much shorter the trail was when Earl did it for the first time.
