Hi friends!

Anyone with experience on the AT help!

Ha...I just want to make sure I have all of my bases covered!
I know you can get your thru-hiker permit for the smokies via mail before you leave. If I have this on me...do I have to get it validated on site (plan to arrive at park during business hours.)
When the rangers check them...what's that process?

Just getting logistics squared away to be sure mine is valid for the hike!

Cheers!

You drop a copy in the thru hiker permit box when you enter the park. No rangers or anyone else involved. The second copy stays on your person in case you are asked for it.

Most hostels and outfitters before the Smokies will allow you to fill out the form online and print it out. No need to do it ahead of time.

save a few $$ if you do not end up going as far as the smokies (maybe 30 % of intended nobo's)

Unless things have changed for AT thru hikers recently, all permits are done online and you download and print your permit.
