I just saw that REI has a Co-op Flash 62 Pack on sale for $93.93. Regularly $189.00. It is 2 oz heavier and 17L larger than the pack I planned to purchase, but $50.00 cheaper.

Considering that every penny I save is money for my thru next spring, is this worth the trade-off?

I love my Flash (55?).

How comfortable are the packs ? You will be wearing it for 8 or more hours per day so comfort is more important than saving $50.

The most expensive pack you buy is the one that is too uncomfortable to wear and has to be replaced by one more comfortable.

For a 3 pound pack, it better be comfortable. Best bet is to get all of your other gear first and then buy the pack that fits your gear and is comfortable.

Did you mean the Flash 58? That is the only pack I see at $93.93. It is only available in an extra small at 52 liters. Disregard the above as I assumed based on the zig-zag man, you were male. It weighs 2 lbs 12 oz.

The Co-op Flash 62 must have sold out. REI's website says it is now no longer available. ( Yes - the zig-zag man is male.)

I think the Flash 62 was the previous model for men and is no longer available. The color was a funky off yellow and it's the pack I currently use.
This is the pack I currently use and I've loved it. It's been comfortable for me with loads usually around 35lbs.

But the only Flash I see currently priced $93.93 is the Flash 58 which is a woman's version similar to the one I have. The color isn't exactly the same as the color that was available when I got my off yellow pack, but the style still looks the same.

The current men's Flash 65 is an updated model. I didn't like it compared to the design of the off-yellow model. It was something like 3/4lb heavier and didn't seem to add any major features.

I've weighed my Flash and it's right under 2lbs and comfortable. Mine is a women's small (or medium?) and it's either the 52/55. Right now it's in a box since we just moved 2 days ago and it's not yet unpacked.

The flash packs are great for their price. I have the older 62 and 45 and have no problems with them in terms of comfort or durability. If you are looking to save money these are great packs.

I had an older Flash 62 (the funky off-yellow which I called puke... also got it for $93.93 or some such) and it was indeed a fairly decent and comfortable pack for the money. I sold it cheap to a friend of mine after I got the Arc Haul for winter.

Typical nearly useless hipbelt pouches (although the hip belt itself was excellent for me), but you could fit a couple of PowerBars in each of them, and the mesh side pockets needed a lot of TLC... don't get 'em anywhere near rocks, lol. I ended up gluing some 1000D Cordura patches on the "corners" using Barge contact adhesive and that worked great.

Normally I would advise waiting until all the other gear is purchased, weighted and measured for an approximate volume, before buying a pack. REI's policy makes that a bit more flexible since you can return within 12 months.

I have both a 47 and 62l Flash that I purchased under similar circumstances. Not the lightest available, but very functional, although the newer ones don't have the expandable sleeve pocket on the back, and comfortable. Hard to beat pricing, very good value IMO>>
