Probably, depends on what and how much your putting into it.
A 55L should be fine on the A.T. - or other non-desert trails.... My current one is a 55L, but I might be able to go down to a 45L.....
(Note: if you have a car-camping sleeping bag - and other non-backpacking type of gear, you would want a larger pack; however, you will also suffer tremendously from the weight of it all....

The best advice is to figure out what you're going to put in it first. Buy your pack last, after you have your gear.
Probably, but if you haven't yet purchased a pack, use a card board box to get an approximate measure of your cubic inches of your gear. You might be able to go down 10 liters or you may need to go larger. It all depends on your gear, as shelb points out, and the area/season you will be backpacking.
As a philosophy, it's better to be smaller and force you to think through "why do I need a particular item". If your budget allows, you can change gear to lighter, smaller options and have a dedicated pack for winter use.

Another question might be : is 55L too big? And if so is it easily compressed to tighten the load. Definitely agree with above posters. Decide what will be going in first. I put everything inside my 40L pack for 7 days during 3 season use.

I don't think it would be big enough for me, but then I insist on synthetic insulation for the AT. The difference in weight compared to down is under a pound, but the difference in volume is more significant.
