My wife and I went on a short day hike in the Cohutta Wilderness (N GA) recently, planning on a relaxing day and nice little mid-day hammock nap. Things went mostly as planned with one glaring exception...

Here's the companion blog article that gives a little more detail about the whole event...https://couch2trail.wordpress.com/2017/09/20/why-i-caught-a-rattlesnake-or-dude-are-you-crazy/

It was a great day!

Good job, John!
I hate when people kill snakes.

Did you find the snake in the campsite?

Why did you pick it up?

I just returned from a 20 day backpacking trip into Cohutta and saw 2 copperheads and a rattlesnake.

We saw two copperheads on a hike there on Labor Day. It makes you wonder how many you didn't see!

Did you find the snake in the campsite?
Why did you pick it up?

It was just across the trail from their campsite.

I give a lot more detail in my blog post (https://couch2trail.wordpress.com/2017/09/20/why-i-caught-a-rattlesnake-or-dude-are-you-crazy/). Reader's Digest version:
1. I like snakes.
2. It's the snake's home and we're just visitors.
3. It was the best option for the snake and the scouts.
4. I really wanted to and thought it was cool =)
