Ian and leslie hurst (Springbok and Dandelion) will be starting 4 April NOBO We live in STELLENBOSCH South Africa. The trail has caugh our imagination and after completing two large section hikes (Springer to harpers ferry and Delaware water gap to Monson) we now want to do the thru hike - proper. We have just fallen in love with the trail and the people we have met there.
Of of course we are looking forward to meeting more people and renewing some friendships with others.
The z pack tents and sleeping bags are driving next week, osprey back packs are bought. The rest of our gear will the same as we used on our section hikes.

Alright, I've finally convinced myself to commit to a round 2. Get ready, guys.

Trail name: I'll let what happens happen.
Direction: NOBO
Start date: Early March
Approach trail: I've done it too many times already

Yo yo yo, I'm a 25 yo piece of hiker trash from 'Bama, nice to meet y'all. If anyone leaving early March is looking to hit the trail hard while also having a frickin' delightful time due to my endearing, yet incorrigible self, feel free to pm me.

Happy trails! See you guys out there.

April 12 (official/ATC registered date) but I may come out early to knock out some miles and tweak my gear (no shelters reserved yet)
I wouldn't miss the approach trail although I may slackpack it to split the difference.

I also go by Swathhiker because I hike large swaths of the trail, much bigger than a section but not a complete thru (until this one). I have done Harper's Ferry to Hanover so many times at this point that often I can recognize parts of the trail by just a close up photo of a switchback. Sad.

I can't wait to see, and sure hope to see, some of my old-timer friends out there bumping around. I tore my MCL (knee side ligament) getting off the sofa, so I'll be the one cruising at .5 mph, which is why I may unofficially start in March to knock out some miles and fine tune my lightweight strategy.

Well, I'm pretty much out. I'm definitely not making my planned departure date and the way things look I'll be lucky to get a week at a time for some small sections in '18. I'm still collecting gear and day hiking locally just in case I become ridiculously productive and knock out 6 months of orders in 2 while not getting any more orders in but since they come in as fast as I can knock them out I don't see it happening.

I'll be following those of you who vlog so get some nice views for me to envy.

yes to approach trail

Who thinks it's possible to make it to Katahdin by June 1?

Not out of the realm of possibilities... 116 Days has been done. However, it is a fast rate that can be impacted by environmental, physical and mental aspects. Works out to around 18 miles a day without zeros, fighting weather, bugs and poor trail conditions. If looking to minimize these factors and increase the chance of success, slide the start date back a Month or so. If wanting this challenge and June 1 cannot be altered, go for it. Not for me but HYOH.

Trail Name: Waiting for one on trail

Direction: NOBO (although may end up teeechnically an unconventional Flip Flop, since I'm going to do a shakedown hike of 70 miles near home in VA right before heading down to Springer. During the thru depending on my pace I'll decide whether to repeat those miles or skip them. Has anyone else done something like this before?)

Estimated Start Date : April 16

Approach Trail - Why not?

any additional info that you want the world to know:
I'm keeping a blog at www.tefltrekker.com (http://www.tefltrekker.com), which also has a lot of photos and stories from the past few years teaching English overseas. (Morocco, Spain, Dominican Republic) I'll also be posting photos on instagram at @tefltrekker. You can also search fb for TEFL Trekker and follow there. [/end shameless self promo] (I'm hoping to transition from teaching to travel writing as a career in the next few years, so hitting all my social media bases!)

Trail name: Funny story...I think mine is going to be Hit~N~Run and my husbands will be Crunch~N~Munch. That’s because my husband is blind and if we see a bear I’m going to hit him and run! Then all I will hear is the bear going crunch and munch on him! Although we may get given different Trail names after we start. Boy this is going to be a fun adventure!

Starting March 31st

Definently doing the Approach Trail!

We’ve been planning this for quite some time now! Looking forward to making new friends and enjoying our time on the trail!

I am super excited to go, but not really a "gear junkie" like most of the people probably here... I am basically having one of my friends be my buyer. I'm not a big planner - carpe diem right?! I will explore the other forums about people's thoughts on how much to ship ahead, plan, etc. I have done a few section hikes and met a couple that actually planned all of their resupply's from the shelters on their phone!

A preexisting condition is something of a timebomb. I always have to take into account my shot knees and so braces are standard equipment for something like this. The odds tough but so be it.
