Getting ready to bite the bullet and do the south end of the Smokies since we only have this 30 mile section and one other short section to finish the AT south of Atkins, VA. I am looking forward to the hike itself but the shuttle is a different story. My son and I have shelter permits for next weekend (Friday, September 29 through Sunday, October 1). Does anyone have suggestions on the best option for a shuttle from Fontana Dam up to Clingmans?

About 5 years ago---I used the hike inn for same shuttle route...

they are about a mile or so away from the marina....

id call them first to set up reservation---and I would think if they couldn't do it, they could tell ya someone who could....

fwiw---my trip, just by myself, was $100....

Never used 'the hike inn'... so I don't know what there rates are like.
But I wouldn't be surprised if today a Fontana to Clingman's Dome shuttle was more like $250+.

I did a couple of shuttles this year, and got some quotes on a couple more. I've been using 'A Walk In The Woods' and 'AAA Hiker Services' for the Gatlinburg area. Trips to places like Greenbrier, Cosby, or New Found Gap have run in the neighborhood of $40 to $75... and that was for trips that were all under 40 minutes one way.

But Fontana to Clingman's is over an hour and a half one way.

The shorter the drive for the shuttler, the cheaper it will be.

Legally, i believe the shuttlers need a permit to operate inside the park. Not. All have this.

I think AWITW and hike inn did used to have it.

A walk in the woods (http://www.awalkinthewoods.com/pages/wd_shuttle.htm) is an A+ choice. Very professional and I would say it should run you about $100-$125
