All predators and scavengers possess an innate curiosity, so anything new to their environment gets inspected to assess whether it’s a food source. The predators and scavengers along the AT have been habituated to the odd smells associated with man, in most instances driving them away but in some instances drawing them to it. You will not be the only one stinking of man out there, so I wouldn’t base my decision to take it on whether it will serve as a unique attractant. How much does it weigh...;)

I wouldn't want to be in a shelter smelling Ben Gay all night or worrying about the bears, mice and raccoons attracted by it, to be honest. Get some prescription rub on Aleve gel or aspercreme.

Of course if you are in a tent that only means he's going to step on my head to get to yours. On the AT at least.

Glad you asked before i did seeing as i'm after the same info. Been out in the sticks enough to realize that Ben Gay type stuff is not what you want on you after sunset, but would mild amounts work for pre daily slog applications? Or would it be too long lasting?

Bears are curious creatures, most anything that is not of their natural environment is an attractant.

Your chances of hiking with a gorgeous chick are dramatically improved if you smell awesome. I googled that!

Personally I've come to the conclusion that if the bears don't aren't attracted to the smell of the 180lbs of delicious meat that I'm made of, then I shouldn't be too worried about the smell of the tenth of an ounce of sports cream I've applied.

I've carried and used Biofreeze and other Menthol based creams without any issues on the AT.

Good point.

A hiker is nothing more than food, typically with more food in its belly and on its breath. If anything, maybe chemicals will mask the smell of your protein-dense calorie filled body.

I would double pack it in Opsacks and bear hang it and only use it in the AM if it were me, or use Aleve gel.

salon pas patches work well and don't have as strong of an odor.

Hunting over a icy hot pile is illegal in most states.

Just had the image of some guy lying on the ground cowboy camping style with a bear licking Icy Hot off his toes.
