I've been using REI Coop's hiking project app and it shows topo, GPS location, points of interest and correlates your position. It relies on users recording routes, major trails like AT are there, but several trails in W.VA & North Virginia (and I imagine elsewhere) haven't been mapped. It's free and has a lot of flexibility to update photos of trails report trail conditions etc... Nice tool in addition to map & compass, and the landnav skills to use them!
