Does anyone have reasonable suggestions or experience with a set of postal scales? I guess they'd have to have a range of .1 grams to 7 lbs? I have a really nice set, but I have a friend preparing for the PCT and I wanted to suggest a set that won't break the bank is easily obtainable (Amazon preferably). I started reading amazon reviews but of course there's gonna be better info on this site...

She is retired ex-military and she is just starting to lighten her pack. I'm sure it's hard to change to lightweight gear after carrying a military pack, so a good cheap set of scales would help her I think

thanks...

Check Amazon. Lots of options on there for less than $20. I have one by Etekcity and it works great.

I picked up one for like $15. Very accurate. It's this one. I've been happy with it.

Look at Lee Valley tools, they have a kitchen scale and a hanging electronic scale.

An accurate consistent digital bathroom scale combined with the kitchen scale comes in handy for knowing exactly what my trailhead weight is. The kitchen scale is also used for making up trail meals and loading up food for a trip.
T.J., really? 😄😎👍

An accurate consistent digital bathroom scale combined with the kitchen scale ...
Same here:
Using the kitchen scale to weight every single item, and before leaving the house I'd set 1x the pack on the bathroom scale, plus placing myself 1x without, and 1x with pack, on this scale.
But usually I care about the pack weight only when doing abroad desert hikes that involve a flight. And I routinely fill my water bottles to reach exactly the luggage weight limit.

I got this scale from Amazon. Works great but is limited to 33 pounds, which is probably a good thing since a backpack over 33 pounds is getting too heavy. Nevertheless, you can easily weigh the individual items you have in your pack. The scale can change between Imperial and Metric measuring systems and shows weight to a fraction of an ounce or grams. I use it to weigh my pack and contents and it's useful for other things around the house.

Hmm thanks all. I'll give her a few of these links. Seems like under 20 bucks will get her something usable

I retired the laboratory scales when I got the kitchen scale. I did use the balance beam weights to verify the digital scale.
0.1 gram measurements? Way overkill.

I picked this one up from amazon (http://amzn.to/2qHqMUp). It only reads to 1 grams but that is plenty specific for me. and it has proven to be quite accurate when comparing between multiple scales and manufacture weights.
