I'm hoping to do so to help promote Flip Flop hikes and give interested parties a different perspective of the trail in addition to the NOBO and SOBO vantage points. My channel is created, AT Flip Flop, but I haven't any content yet. My gear is currently spread between two places on opposite sides of the world. After I unite my gear I will get started with adding content. I'm planning on departing Harper's Ferry on April 29 going North. I might attend the Flip Flop festival and will have content from that if I do attend. My uploads will be subject to WIFI access along the way.

I'm starting in April and intend to vlog and blog my experience... I'll admit its been a bit awkward in front of the camera but I've put up a few videos on my prep for the trail.

YouTube channel is Midlife Hiker: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQXR8sqgGj3ZnMPuHDlvhaA

I'm a bit concerned that it may get in the way of my trail experience... tech on the trail irks me to a certain extent but at the same time I'm using it to help me remember the relive the experience so I think it is worth it!

Have a great hike!

Chris

In my experience vlogs and other video "articles" tend to focus on the person, not the topic.

To be fair, they aren’t wildlife documentaries. You’re watching to see someone’s personal experience with the trail. unless maybe you’re referencing something that happened on a site that I don’t know about? Generally when someone asks you about your trip you give them your personal experience instead of just a slew of historical or geological facts. A lot of times people will say "I wish I could have been there with you" I think that might be the main reason so many people enjoy watching vlogs of thru hikes.

I've got a good list of hikers that are vlogging or using trail journal at www.hikerfocus.com (http://www.hikerfocus.com)

If you know of anyone I can add, let me know!

As opposed to journals? Its just another medium to convey the thoughts of the individual.

Maybe I havent seen the right ones. In a journal I most often see pics and can read the descriptions, in the vlogs I'm staring at the hiker looking into their camera.

I started watching videos on youtube just as a way to learn a little about the trail, find a section to do for a week or so this summer, get some tips and gear knowledge, and have kinda become addicted to it. Living vicariously I suppose... Problem is that there are almost too many to follow this year. Maybe there were always a lot & I just found a few... Anyway, Just have to pick a few.... some are funny, some are vulgar, some boring, some enlightening, and others are a good mix in a "hiking buddy". One I'm following, ArnieG I think her channel is, has for a lot of her prep hikes shown little trail shots as she walked....like a knee cam view now and then while she's hiking...I gather as a way to show others what the trail is like instead of always just looking at the hiker's face... interesting idea but I don't think I've noticed her doing it lately....

Some really good videos for sure.
Only thing I find annoying, and I hope it doesn’t happen when I attempt my thru hike, is someone assuming I want to be on camera. I don’t want to be asked why I’m hiking the AT, or to praise Jesus for the views...I’m out there for me, and my reasons.
I’m an introvert by nature, so I hope someone asks me first if I want to be on video.

When you log into YouTube it seems like every single hiker is walking around vlogging their whole trip. But I don't think that's really the case.

I agree with you 100% on this issue. I am out there for me and me alone. Of course if I come across another hiker in trouble, injured or who has misjudged their food supply I will stop help them out or share my meals with them. I am one of those people that believes by helping someone else it will come back to me two fold.

It does bother me when I come across a hiker who somehow got more than a scratch that only carries a couple bandaides and I have dig into my kit to fix them up. But being a former paramedic, and current wilderness first aide and first responder I just put it behind me and help those people.

I also plan to do the recording of vlogs, but I don't know how to do it better.
