Looks like almost every county the A.T. passes through in North Carolina is under a Heavy Snow Warning for this weekend (Feb 11th). Looks like the highest elevations and far western slopes could be looking at 8-16 inches by Sun Night. Last time I was out with that much snowfall the drifts hit 3 feet or more. Pretty for the landscape, tough on the hiking. Not too sure about how Ga. is going to fare. Updates from anyone?:sun

It's snowing/sleeting in Clayton, GA. The Mtns on the GA AT are probably getting some accumulation. Can't wait to go play in it.

I have a flight to DC in the morning where there are blizzard like conditions. I wish I had a travel bag for my X-Country skis, but I don't.

Will they fit in a soft-sided rifle case?:D That would go over well with Security.;)

right on. i'll be headed that way again after lunch today. i've got four wheel drive and one hell of a tow strap, so don't worry. really, the roads are fine. lots of traffic last night and DOT has been hard at work. should be smoothe sailing, but i would definantly stay off of Richard Russel Scenic Highway.

Snow totals seem to be a little lighter than first predicted. All rain here in Upstate S.C.(sigh). Mt. LeConte in GSMNP reported 8 inches on the ground as of 7:30AM though. Still plenty of time left for more before the whole system pulls away.:sun

We have about 6 inches here in Fairfield Glade Tennessee about an hour or so away from where the smokies are in Gatlinburg. It is still snowing and beautiful. I have been reading Trail Journals and there are a bout 3 or 4 people hiking now that are journaling. Anxious to read that they are okay.

They came into town last night very late and are sleeping the day away after eating the Waffle House out of business. We have no snow at all down here in town but they reported waist high drifts across Big Bald.

So far all we have gotten near DC is a 36 degree rain...YUCK. Right now it is snowing rather hard but not sticking at all....what a waste of snow! They are predicting that it will snow all night and we will get 4-8 inches....I'd like to see enough to close school on Monday but that's looking unlikely....

A sure sign of bad weather....I keep trying to view "new posts" om Whiteblaze and I keep getting a "busy or broken server message" - everyone must be hanging out here!!!! :)

It's snowing like a sumbitch here in Damascus.:)

Looks like Va. Mountains have been getting hammered all day. N.C. didn't get as widespread snow as the NWS called for. More snow is developing west of the GSMNP, though. Might get a good deal more above 4500' throughout the Southern Appalachians through tomorrow.:sun

Here near Wesser (at the NOC) we had at least 3-5 inches. Really wet snow. It started dropping "powder snow" about 45 minutes ago. Ground is still too warm/wet for it to stick.

I saw tracks where some people had went up the AT....wonder how far they went.

i hiked in from elk garden to rhododendron gap last night by the light of the moon. i spooked three hikers that were staying at the thomas knob shelter. after thumbing through the register, i hiked on towards rhodo gap. it was about 25 degrees and the clouds were rolling in when i turned off the headlamp around 9:00. i'd say the low was down around 20 or so.

this morning i woke up to find anywhere between 6 and 10 inches of fresh snow with it still falling. snowed off and on all morning as i went across pine mountain and back.

the snow let up around noon, but started up again by early afternoon. there were a few deeper drifts back down near elk garden.

by the time i left damascus around 4:00 it was coming down pretty heavy again.

there should be some pretty good accumulation in the high country by the time it is all said and done.

If you should see a large white Ford van with Forsyth County tags that has run off the road, stop and say hello. How prophetic of me! A little over an hour after I posted that, I was on FS42 near Horse Gap, stuck on the side of the road!

FS42 from Cooper Gap to at least Hightower Gap, maybe further, is impassible right now without 4WD. I didn't have 4WD. The van slid into the ditch, somewhere near Horse Gap, with a flat tire. In 5 inches of snow.

So I hitched a ride into Suches, called the wife who brought me the portable air compressor. I killed time in the Suches store until the wife gave me a lift to Gooch, then I hitched back to the van and with the help of 2 carloads of 4WDrivers got the van out of the ditch, changed the tire, and was towed back to firm ground at Cooper. From there I made it back to Gooch Gap where my wife was waiting in her car.

I called the Hiker Hostel to see if they'd shuttle me out to my van, but they politely declined. They were not driving to Springer today and probably not tomorrow because they're not stupid. (They didn't actually say that last part, but it's very true!)

Snow was starting to fall again about 4 o'clock and when we stopped by the store in Suches to air up my spare and get gas, they'd closed the store early and went home. Snow had started to cover the road again when we drove through Woody Gap.

Beat me to it Scaper. I'm closer to Front Royal than Linden, but I'm only, what, 10 miles down 55 from you.

I intend to make the most of this by going sledding after breakfast!

GSMNP snowfall update: NWS reports Mt.Leconte with 32" this morning as of 7:30AM. Those west facing slopes are still getting hammered now. I hope all the backpackers up there are getting along OK. This event happening on a weekend increaces the likelyhood that someone may need rescuing. I hope not.:sun

... we have 12 inches - I just finished shoveling my driveway and sidewalk. Heavy snow beating down the branches - couldn't use my electic snowshovel.

I imagine 80-odd miles west of here in Shenandoah NP there's at least 50% more.

Coming home from Asheville last night it started coming down heavy. Had to park the car and thankfully Hikin Heidis AWD made it the rest of the way. 6-8" on the trail here near Allen Gap. Stopped snowing a hour ago but more tonight!? Trine, "the Red Dane" is here w/ us now. Double the snow that I've seen up here in the last 2 years. Hopefully I've enough BEER to survive!:D

Hiked some today near wesser. Here are a few snapshots that turned out OK.

It was nice to hike in fresh snow. I love the crunch sound it makes under your boots!

Really could have used some trekking poles on the steep sections though...

Columbia, MD - The local news reports 21.3 inches measured in Columbia. I measured 18 or 19 in a few places while shoveling this morning. Reminds me of my undergraduate days at Michigan Tech. My only beef is that my "snow day" canceled church instead of work!
