View Full Version : Bugs in March on the AT (NC)?
Anyone foresee bug issues in mid-march on the NC portions of the AT?
The only thing you might see if it's warm enough is some non-biting knats that can become a pest. They will buzz around and land on you.
I am trying to decide if I need to bring a bug shirt for mid March.
I would be more concerned with being prepared for lows in the teens. Bugs don’t move when the temperature is that low.
Grandfather Mountain recorded a 102 mph wind gust yesterday or today.
Be safe.

Lordy no. No bug shirt needed in the South any time of year.

I agree with them that bugs wont be an issue in March in NC.
I usually treat all my hiking clothes with permethrine, just to be safe, before each section - and as well as killing ticks, it does a really good job of repelling most other insects, too. Even on my summer trips, I haven't had a need for bug spray while wearing Permethrine treated clothes.
