Mid summer 2005 I was letting a con artist hang around Budget Inn and
I thought he was someone old just down on his luck,I'm too free hearted.
Long story made short he wound up steeling a lot of things when I was out of town because an elderly family member was sick.The police investigation
proved it was him.In return of his grudge he is running up and down the trail from Rock Gap to Big Spring shelter posting notes on what a bad business we have for hikers and he was looking out for hikers.All he is looking out for is his grudge against us because the police got him for stealing.
I had a hiker come in and rent a room yesterday and show us one of these notes that was stuck up in a shelter.We had a friend that heard him bragging how he
could make hikers afraid to deal with us.We have been helping AT hikers for
several years and they have been very happy with our services.
Please don't
let twurps like this lead you astray.Ask other hiker who know our reputation Another northbounder checked in today saying he saw them also.Please visit Franklin if you can even if you don't stay with me.If We can help you
we will on and above our motels.If you ever stay at one of my places and
you find something wrong.Tell me and I will do everything I know to make
it right.
But Beware there are twurps on the trail in many more places than this.
I doubt that many will be influenced by the rantings of only one person. Your reputation seems to be excellent. I wouldn't worry about it. :clap

I'll check the Rufus Morgan shelter everytime I walk by and make sure there isn't anything posted.
It was clean on Feb 12. Doesn't look like many people have passed through there in the past month.

What's his trail name/real name? What's he look like? Is he living on the trail?I put a little more discription on my website,I really hate to put names but:he is a little over 60 years old,gray but full head of hair,wears cat eye glasses.5'10--175 lbs Every day or two like on Sanford and son he says I believe I'm having a stroke,He always smeels like grease.Where he lives is in Ga 15 miles south of franklin in a slum district in
a cheep trailor he rented for about $150. per mo.he drives a little white ford
escort maybe early 1990s.He will tell you he was a private investigator,and a crooked judge took everything he had even his license for telling the truth
he was a college professor but because he was such a good artist the Deen
ran him of from the university.A cop told me he wasn't a professor but was an art teacher but was suspended because he was in a controversy burning
of a rented home in Cullowhee,NC to try to collect renters insurance.I will
admit he is one of the best artist I've ever seen.He sells paintings at Flea
markets.He paints pictures of trains and sunsets and mountian scenes.If
you run into a person fitting this description,ask him if he is the artist.One
could say why do you not suspect him right away with his lyes?14% of
Macon Co,NC are natives.We have all kinds from every where here.A large
number are really great people.Lots of times I hear these hard to believe
stories but later pans out true.This guy is a smooth talker.

atmosphere in Franklin for lots of visitors,but hikers are special people to me.I always try to see they are taken care of and treated with upmost of respect when they stop in Franklin.This doesn't matter is they are my motel
guest or if they just stopped in the town or guest at other facilities.I treat
all the same.This guy posted there was never hot water.I average a 95-97
health dept certificate.Once Lightning Hit a transformer and blew a water heater about 11;00am and I couldn't get a plumber there until the next
afternoon.I own an apartment across the street and lucky for me I had a
unit unrented and about a dozen or so hikers showered there.I don't ever
know of not having hot water again.The twurp must think all hikers are stupid,If I had no hot water all that is neede is call the health dept and
they would shut me down if it isn't fixed within 24 hours.He says we're a
fraud because at the hiker fest we charged for food.We ask for a recommended $5. donation on food and you could eat all you want all day
any one short of money was not turned away.We all had a great time.

Ron, I'd suggest that you take a deep breath and do essentially nothing further about this.
The rantings of a single person in shelters and such are pretty lame. I'd be a bit more concerned that folks who attempt to compete with your shuttling services would be more like to spread such rumors. I'd put more effort at looking at the Rock Gap shelter given the closeness to Franklin and the road, if you feel a need to remove fliers about your place.
You will have a great hiking season beginning in just a few weeks.

Most people would have to wonder about the sanity of someone who goes about posting notes at shelters ranting about a motel or its proprietor. If a person has a legit complaint, they go to court, they go to the Better Business Bureau, they go to TripAdvisor.com.
Don't worry about this nut-case.

Don't worry about this clown, your reputation is solid and well known. He will have no or little impact on your opportunity to continue helping hikers. By the way, I plan on being there on March 31 for the celebration. Be sure to save a single room for me.

I'll reserve you one.I have found two bands that is really good.One Is Country and the other is old southern rock I am going to try to get one for
Fri and other for Sat.I may have to pick on Sun If the hikers promise not to
leave.

Hi Ron, take it from me, for what that is worth...DO NOT let it get to you!! He is not worth you losing sleep over. But what he is doing is not only a pain in your um, business..... but it is probably not legal either. You should let the CMC down your way know about his notes so they can remove them. You may also want to call Todd Remaly with the ATC... he is very interested in keeping track of these trouble making people so we can avoid future problems like we have had in the past few years.
I had a very nice stay at the Budget Inn last November. Ron treats hikers more like friends and family than customers. Keep up the good work Ron! It was a pleasure getting to know you.

miss J.thanks and chance i will hike the trail from Mt Albert to windingstair.
But in a way It really makes someone like him look like a real jerk.I have a
deputy who is a friend of mine,said he saw him in in Ga a few days ago and he was doped up real good.On 3-24-05 their is a picture of the deputy on a
post of butterfly moons trailjournals.com when we were doing a little different type trail magic in the limo.
