We already have one, the Grand Canyon of PA, aka Pine Creek Gorge. Very lovely place.

Don't forget Georgia has the Little Grand Canyon - Providence Canyon State Park.

Happy April Fools Day. That would be really cool if a cenote formed at the lower elevations in GSMNP though.

The GSMNP Sinkhole is true and will consume one half of the Park in the next 6 months. The good news is the Park service is moving several hundred Cherokee Indian tribal members (some reluctantly) down into the bottom of the Gorge and setting up a living tribal village for the tourists. They will also serve as packers for the tourists, or "sherpas". Said one Park official: "Heck, we might as well allow them back in on a more permanent basis since they lived on this land for the last 10,000 years."

Thanks Bronk for the wonderful point. A new Cades Cove Motor Loop will circle the new Gorge and give the 12 million rolling tourists the opportunity to dump their refrigerators and washing machines and even their old vehicles off the side of the Loop and down into the Canyon.

After the NPS determined that Arizona's Grand Canyon can hold 900 trillion footballs (see footnoted source), it has been determined that the GSMNP Canyon can hold 200 million old pickup trucks or 400 billion refrigerators.

I know of more than a half dozen places in the national forest that used to be dumping grounds for old appliances...the problem solved itself around 2008 when the economy crashed and scrap metal prices went through the roof. Those places have all been cleaned up since then.

No shelters being devoured so far. I'm sure the park service is expediting construction of new shelters so they can send out emergency alert emails to anyone that gets a Backcountry permit. Then hold a press conference lamenting the loss of said shelters.
