My daughter made these at a neighbor's house today. They are delicious and seem like a prefect backpacking food. Not sure if they get messy when it's really hot though.

1 cup oats
1 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup peanut butter

I'm sure you could add any kind of seed, dried fruit, or chocolate as well.

That is an interesting idea. I like combo. I guess you combine the ingredients and roll them in a ball?

Thank you for taking the time to post this.

Yes. Forgot instructions, but it's that easy. Combine all ingredients and form into balls or bars.

The recipe is beyond good :-) It was fun making them. I will use a larger bowl next time ;-)

In a larger bowl mix dry ingredients and then add crunch peanut butter. Fold into dry stuff add honey last.
bite size.......one per meal only ;-)

The neighbor who made these with the kids said you can substitute corn syrup for anybody with a honey allergy.

How about molasses for a bit of pizzazz? and maybe some ingredients similar to what's used in B&M Brown Bread, molasses being one of them. I feel like experimenting :-)

This seems like a no limits recipe. I think I'll replace the oats with muesli

No limits is cool :-)

I crunched up one the balls over my cold cereal and as I ate the cruncies worked their way to the bottom of the bowl and to my pleasant surprise they did not absorb the milk.

Shortly following breakfast I put one of the balls into the microwave and zapped it for 15 sec on hi to see what heat would do to it. Just warmed it a bit so I put it back in for 30 sec, took it out and it was still in a ball shape but was able to easily compress it into a cookie shape and proceeded to eat it....yummy!

My wife had the idea of making a batch of peanut butter cookies with the milk ball recipe and then to microwave them and then push candy kisses down into the softened ball. She likes the idea of no bake cookies :-)

So....warm weather should have very little effect on the milk balls, no gooyness due to honey or peanut oil ooze.

If you google honey milk balls you will find a zillion variations.
Agave nectar in place of honey is one.
Are y’all using quick cook or instant oatmeal?
The combinations are endless.

I used regular oatmeal that needs to be cooked, not the quickie stuff. I buy it it in a #10 can. It's Non GMO. I have to pick oat hulls out from between my teeth once in a while.:D

We called these “healthy honeys” 30 years ago in Scouts when we made these for backpacking trips. The two hacks I found for prolonging their shape in hot summer days was to roll the balls in freeze dried powdered milk and then freeze them.

What does rolling them in freeze dried powdered milk do for them?

It acts as a non-stick coating and prevents them from losing their shape.

There are some at this link:

they pretty much look like blonder versions of the hazelnut date ones above.

Thanks for that capehiker.

I had an idea yesterday while I was drinking a warm cup of Mexican Style Instant Hot Chocolate Drink

https://www.amazon.com/Abuelita-Mix-Inst-Hot-Choc/dp/B00NRE04RU

My idea was to substitute the dry milk with the powdered Mexican style hot chocolate drink and proceed with the other ingredients.

I keep thinking that the addition of some malt powder might be a nice taste.

Yes, I agree. I like the taste of malt. I liked malted milk shakes for that special taste that malt has. Good suggestion.:)

This is so yum! I am going to try it with added Nectar Protein power (chocolate or maybe cappuccino flavor)! If it works well, I will let you know the nutritional info!
