Nate Edmonds used a knife to kill a coyote that attacked him at the Hitchiti Experimental Forest.
Coyote had rabies.

I am surprised that the pocket knife was able to get the job done but more surprising than that is the number of people I know who carry no knife at all.
Wow! I have hiked that trail many times having grown up in that area. The most “dangerous” thing I ever encountered was ticks. It is typically a well traveled trail, especially on weekends.

You guys crack me up! I no longer carry my coyote but I always carry a Cold Steel Peace Maker II with 4 inch fixed full tang blade,weighs about 4.5 oz. with sheath as I recall.

Currently there’s legislation to restrict coyote teeth to no more than 10.

That is a crazy story. Georgia is now allowing unlimited killing of coyotes, 24/7/365. I live in Atlanta and hear coyotes all the time in my neighborhood. Nearly every outside cat has been killed including my own.
That said, I really don't fear them. Never in the history of the U.S. has an adult been killed by a coyote. If that man had pepper spray like I carry when hiking, I bet he wouldn't have gotten bit. But rabies do make animals do strange things.
I live in a very well populated subdivision in suburbia east coast Florida. We have a coyote problem, mostly cats and small dogs go missing. We had originally thought criminals were stealing the tiny designer dogs for resale or reward money (it’s a thing in Florida), but multiple residents have added motion activated security cameras showing the coyotes taking the small animals. I’ve never seen them in the daytime.
Thank you science for developing rabies vaccinations and antibodies. Rabies is a terrible death in the wild, and fortunately just doesn’t seem to happen to people much anymore due to medical care. Rabies is 100% fatal by the time symptoms show. I’m glad this post was started because it brings awareness to a mostly forgotten danger. Usually rabid animals look sick, less often they are uncharacteristicly aggressive, or display a staggering gait. children and usually women try to help the “poor sick animal” and get scratched or bitten, or confused bats have scratched a victim while flying erratically. These events all require rabies antibody protocols. Go to a local ER if this happens to you.
I hike with a dog. I keep her rabies vaccine up to date and carry a copy as a picture in my phone. This helps keep her safe and also it’s the law.

kestral, there are a lot more coyotes living near FL beachside and other typical "suburban" communities than people realize. Pets are easy pickings for a coyote. Leaving the cat out at night is a very bad idea, if you care about it.

Domestic dogs kill and maim people with alarming frequency. The dogs are very rarely rabid, I suspect.

It said a three year old girl in California was killed. Do you consider that an adult human being? (maybe in Tennessee)
And the other lady lived in Canada. By the way, that is not part of the United States.

Did you not read his correction? He corrected himself in post 15, one minute after he made the error in post 14.

But rabies do make animals do strange things.damn near every night when the weathers warm and the windows are open I can hear the squeals and squeaks soften over a period of time as a rabbit/cat gets chocked out, fox and coyotes have made a huge come back in NJ.
