Photo caption calls her a "backpacker" and maybe she is, but she with no gear, she wasn't backpacking at the time of the incident.

This quote from the article is rather disheartening.

“Her shouts for help were heard on Saturday by a member of the public, who only informed police on Thursday after learning of the search, according to Kersey.”

It's also disheartening the number of comments that say "don't hike alone".

Hiking alone wasn't her problem... Not having someone to call for help the moment she was known to be missing was her problem.
She did tell friends that she was going for a hike. But apparently she did NOT setup a plan to let someone know when she would be back and instruct them to call for help if she failed to report in.
Instead, it took several days before friends realized she was simply missing before they called for help.

Outside of the USA the term "backpacking" is frequently applied not to woodland or wilderness travel but instead to international travelers who transport their luggage in backpacks. Those penny pinching "backpackers" tend to be youthful and to remain traveling for extended periods. They often spend nights in hostels or other very cheap accommodations. Most youthful international 'backpackers' are neither inclined to camp away from 'civilization' nor equipped to do so.
