Just wondering what type, if any, has worked for ya'll.

Tried em all ...none worked for me. They all trap too much of the salt saturated perspiration and end up causing a mondo case of the chafe.

I still carry one pair of the synthetic long legged mesh ones (REI brand) for town stops or as sleep wear in the summer months.

none... swimming trunks or running shorts with a built in liner work best for me. i've been able to get away with wearing underwear on dayhikes, but on anything long distance/time, they cause chafing.

i've heard good things about spandex biking shorts (unpadded), but have never used them.

Under Armour boxer briefs.... They wick so well, it feels like you have air-conditioning in your pants. Expensive, though, at about $18 a pair.

Under Armors are great. I'd previously used Spandex Duofolds, but the Under Armors are better at compression and wicking. Price is pretty much the same.

I like biker shorts (no built in gel pad of course), prevents that painful leg rub.

I here the nike dryclime or golite version are pretty nice.

Keep the zipper open.

I've heard Bodyglide is a good product to use to prevent chaffing. I tried using vasoline for a while and it didn't work very well... this can be a huge problem as it may stop your hike for a while.
I've also heard of people (well, 1 person) wearing ladies Leggs stockings, but he cut off the legs and just wore the underwear part. He said they worked very well at wicking, dried quickly and were very cheap.

If not wearing any hiking.. think about a camp pair, something to sleep in..

don't wear any while in the woods, that way you can pee faster.....

I have "thunder thighs" and used to have a problem with chafing, especially when running. The new compression shorts, like the Underarmours, are great! I use them now for running and plan on using them on my hikes from now on.

'slogger,

What type of shorts do you wear with no underwear? Lined? Nylon? Poly?

Running shorts with built in underwear or ex officio (expensiv-io, but worth it) underwear.

I switched to boxers and more specifically Under Armour's just for hiking. So far, so good.

Some women hikers wear no underware and hike in mini skirts. It is amazing the number of men that will stay below to help them up a rock face when the hiking gets tough in the Whites and Maine. They are just never alone on the trail.

one of the valuable lessons that i learned from long distance hiking that is also true in my other life: no underwear needed.
Unless you mean long underwear of course. I like Cool max for those. (or good old polypro for the winter heavyweights)

She-dino favors commando (with a longish skirt!), but does wear plain old microfiber granny panties (found anywhere old ladies shop). When the she-dino is especially fluffy, bike shorts work to keep thigh-rub from setting anything important on fire.

He-dino uses the microfiber boxer briefs from Target.

I also use light weight running shorts as they do double duty as swim shorts.
