Whatever you do, don't take the Dog. (Grayhound.) I think this list could set your head spinning with stories about them.

Need to know
From Where
To Where
Add one way car rental to your deliberations. I difference in travel time could make the rental car economically viable.

The Dog is fine with me. the money I saved was used to buy useless camping equipment listed in another post. Oh and ice cream.

It's not the most pleasant means of transportation, but for a medium length trip (one overnight) it's not too bad. I always seem to get stuck at some bus station or other at 2 am for a few hours. Interesting time to be there. I can get on a bus not far from my place and be at one of several locations along the AT in 24 hours or less. Book well in advance and doesn't cost much either. Mid week tends to be the best time to travel to have an empty seat next to you.
