SNP maps indicate a Simmons Gap Ranger Station. Pictures pretty much show an abandoned small house that was a small church at one time. Is it manned?? Why is it listed as a ranger station? What are the buildings near it in the photos, which are in the park boundries? Any rain shelter in the area?

Thanks.

Simmons Gap Ranger - Aside from the old stone house there are 2 sets of rangers houses down back past the original stone house. Additionally, up past the stone house there is a fueling point for the rangers vehicles, and 3 maintenance buildings. Of the 3 - one is still used, it has a dual use. It houses SAR equipment, and is used by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club as a storage and repair point for all the tools we use in the SNP South District for Trail Maintenance and Trail Building. Up closer to Skyline Drive and the AT, a short walk down the Rangers road is a very reliable stream.
There are no rain shelters there, the entire area for Simmons Gap Ranger station is within the park boundaries.
