This my be old news but I will tell it again just in case. I was in Cherokee, NC yesterday with the family and discovered to my surprise that Outdoor 76 has a store there. Cherokee would make a good trail town I think because it is less crowded than Gatlinburg and it has a food lion there for resupply. Rooms may be a different story because of the casino.

Cherokee has far less traffic than Gatlinburg. Cherokee Campground is on the far side of town, headed east, about 500 yards from the Casino. While there are big RVs and pop up campers, they have some tent sites too. There are hot showers and a small camp store but it has just snacks. One of the owners, Barry Craig, is a serious outdoor person and is hiker friendly. The Food Lion is down the street and around the corner from the casino. There is no bus service or shuttle from Newfound Gap to Cherokee, but there is bus service within Cherokee and the bus makes stops at this campground on request. It would not be hard to hitch a ride with someone headed over to Cherokee from Newfound Gap. Cherokee Campground is behind the Wendy's burger place on the highway. Soco Creek runs parallel to the campground, providing a very pleasant atmosphere. This campground has "bunk houses" which are just shelters with a porch and a place to sleep, using the public bathrooms. They are very affordable and provide a break from a tent. There are also about a dozen log cabins, some two bedroom some one bedroom, which are very nice. The cabins are a bit pricey but an option for those looking to spoil themselves. I use this place as a base camp whenever I am hiking in the area.

I'm guessing a hungry hiker could put quit a dent in the AYCE buffet (Chef Stage) at the casino. It is very pricy but the variety of food there is astounding. :)
