I have heard on TV news that on Friday February 17th, that when that front moved through, the winds gusted to 145 mph on top of Stratton Mountain in Vermont (right on the AT/LT)!! WOW. that bests even Mount Washington's peak recorded gust of 135.

Does anyone know to what extent the trees were damageed on Stratton? I would have to think there were extensive blow downs on mountain given those winds. Probably going to be a lot of tral work to be done to get ready for the upcoming hiking season!

David, the wind speed record for Mt. Washington is 231 miles per hour, not 135, set in April 1934. Here (http://www.mountwashington.org/bigwind/) is a history of the storm.

I think he meant on that day, not for Mt. Washington's overall record.

Yes I meant on that Day (2-17-2006). I realize the record for MT washington is 231 mph.

Even so..normally Mt Washington is the windiest place around.. so I am surprised that Stratton Mtn actually beat it out on 2-17!
