I thought MS wanted a woman that would sit at home and cook while producing children. Seems BS is only good for one - and that is a maybe. If I remember right, while she has the equipment to produce, her parenting skills are not supposed to be all that and a bag of chips.

I would think her parenting skills were no worse that any other 25 year old mother who was under constant video and camera surveillance.

Hiked the roughly 9.5 from Chesire to there today. Did Graylocke yesterday; numerous tiny PUDs on south side of summit, with weather akin to what I saw on Mt. Washington. Have around 104 miles left in my thruhike. Knees doing well for now. Parents will be in Mass. tomorrow, staying about 4 days.

Note to Tom Levardi, Rob Bird, and the other good citizens of Dalton:

You've just changed your clocks back, and also your smoke detector batteries.

Now it's time to change your doorlocks!!

Actually, the residents of my birthstate, the People's Republic of Masssachusetts, DESERVE to have Minnesota Smith in their neighborhood for a week. He might be the only Republican left in the Commonwealth!

But in truth, as he well knows, I'm just kidding. Nice work, Smitty, and let us know how you're getting along. Looks like your ETA in Kent should be around the 20th......looks like you'll make it home for Thansgiving after all, and while you're eating turkey, the folks who wrote you off in Georgia can feast on crow. As they say overseas, "Good On Ya!", Smitty, you're gonna make it!
============================================

Actually, I vote Constitution Party, when I vote.

Mr. Levardi is a nice guy and a great friend to hikers. I'm getting to sleep inside on a sofa, FYI. Rainbow Brite and Mountain Dew hiked out this morning. Weather cleared and warmed; no more snow, albeit lots of near-fording of streams today due to yesterday's persistent rain. Climb up from N. Adams towards Mt. Williams surprisingly steep, but not an issue after north of VT.

Info for Matthewski: go to www.loompanics.com (http://www.loompanics.com) , and buy a book called "Tax Avoision" (sp).

Which is a good time to bring up an important point: MS ruined 3 photos, including 2 that would be very important to him, by not investing in a good camera.

It doesn't have to be expensive - my wife went on a biz trip to China and took our good camera. I was going somewhere else and wanted a decent digital. I set a limit of $100 for the second camera. Wal-Mart had a bubble-packed no-name hanging on the wall, buncha megapixels & zoom for about $60. Cool! Figured I'd saved $40. But the supplied card only held two pictures. Oops. Back to Wally for $30 of memory and a little camera case, and with rounding and tax I'm about at $100. It's now my hiking camera. It takes nice outdoor photos and would have saved two of MS' summit shots.

I had Minnow take duplicates of everything, using two separate cameras for each shot. One I sent to my parents, and they said they came out fine. The other I sent to Matthewski (he sent me a camera a while back, so it seemed in order). Is this the "2 spoiled shots" you're talking about, DWM?

She's less than 27 yo and obviously fertile.

But with her income stream she would obviously wear the pants in the family. And I don't think ole MS could handle a dominant woman.

I just don't have a use for one. A family needs a husband and a wife, not two husbands.

Anyway, Spears is unquestionably a common woman, not a lady. I prefer the latter.

I am assuming, I don't know for sure. If it's the same then he's whittled on it some because the dark inner bark has been completely removed. Earlier pictures showed it with irregular brown streaks - the inner bark - that are now gone.

It came off naturally, through wear and tear on the AT for 8 months.

A family needs a husband and a wife, not two husbands.

There are plenty of two-husband families, and many of them are doing OK despite your sense of entitlement and superiority. They could be doing even better if people like you would stop being so judgemental and just tend to your own business.

to the family of minnesota smith. it is with pride that the hiking community holds your son.it is praise that you here from the lips of even some critics. it is not an unimportant thing, these deeds of his he has done. and with heavy heart do some watch the trails end chase your son for the first time since he began chaseing it. all of the lovers of hiking everywhere share in the magnitude of his acomplishments. he has solo northbound thruhiked the appalachian trail. not a small task to set oneself.all those who trod before and after him share in his deed. it is only the past , current and future years thruhikers who really show the gold of the trail to the world. we hope the world cherishes this national treasure so as to preserve it and other possesions of the people of earth.as she does to us all,...the appalachian trail has wooed your son into love. his gift to the future is his love , knowlage and understanding of the traol combined with his activist minded self,...he surly will be a positive force for this trail. now more than ever , the world needs change. steping out of your life to hike 9 months is good for comming up with a new self. thats what this trail does. you do not know the man calling himself minnesota smith. the trail ate that man you knew. this is the one the trail figures you , and the world , need right now. thank you ms.

if i could hike next year this is what ill do.on feb 17th ill get myself to amacalola and on the 18th ill wake up and scream,....thank you god!
as im launching up springer i will place a call. to a certian minnesota smith. he will send me off and that will be the start of my morning. later in the evening ill stop at usfs42 and camp. ill search the trash cans and go to sleep. i like to see who was sick of carrying what food. its so easy. anyway, as i lay down to rest , ill whisper,...thanks lord. that single moment is my goal for now. getting to that point is a far way to go. ive never gone further than i have to go now. metaphisicaly speaking. im good to begin this long 100 day mission. all i need is prayer. ms, before you leave the trail will you talk to god for me bro? thanks.if i fail this year theres allways next.and im commited to do a thru before the dam myan calender runs out. in reality, war is the enemy of thruhiking. in an all out nukler war, i doubt folks are gonna be thruhikin. we all need to consider the real possability that the situation that happened to earl , could happen here. with years of nonhikeability for service age men and women. ant the resession thats a commin aint helpin the state of our sport. we really may be looking at the end of thruhiking for a while. im worried about even next feb being a time of peace enough to hike.

there is no difference bettween us. we both are not hiking our beloved trail 24/7. we are exactly the same. in life there are those who can hike and those who must work and hike .i work for a man for instance, who could afford to put every member of this site on trail forever and not notice the dollars gone.in retrospect , i should have listened to jesus about not worrying for tommorow and all that. i do so wish i had dawned hippy sandles as a teen and roughed it untill now. living on the trail and getting just enough work along the way to allways be on the road. it sucks being a member of sosiaty with an apartment and a job and taxes and all that this means.i should have been a train hoppin hobo for sure. my only mid life crisis is how to still do it without leavin my son.no offence to the working half. i just would rather have nothin and die in pain and young and cold and wet and alone for some odd reason.(partialy kidding)

good morning minnesota smith and onlookers. this is the begining of the last . the last monday on trail for ms. the last week on trail for ms. the last november mornings on trail for ms. the last batches of whatever the hell that pot full of glop contains for breakfast glop. the last moments truly alone and at peace you may see for quite a while. we envy you ms. we dread the tears you must flow at trails end. these tears ive heard tell of from thru hikers since time begot. you will cry like a baby minne. you will sob uncontrollubly for no distinguishable reason. then a calm , then sad, then the ride home, the people, noticing nothing has changed. but you. you changed minne. and not untill you slip from the warm womb of the trail into the cold flat surface of the world ,...will you see that your naked. striped away are all your troubles. stronger, faster, able to put up with more crap. you will become supper soda.others will not see it. only the weight loss and the glow of health. but they can never know that inside you have changed . now you see clearly what you must do. simplifi, and live outside more. and mostly, return to the trails edge and plan another hike.

Need we bring up the "oui oui" incident @ Wawayanda?

Being a humble man, I feel certain that MS would have gladly allowed this incident fade away without further comment. After all, MS has already received acclaim far and wide for his contributions to environmental awareness, international understanding and World peace.

Since August when MS installed his BAD (Bear Aggression Deterrent) system at Waywayanda Shelter there has not been a single fatal bear attack. Well done, Mr. Smith.

MOWGLI, Thanks for the reminder. It would have been a shame if MS failed to receive credit for this significant contribution to mankind.

i hate the end of this hike and then of all good things. ends arent supposed to exist. you heard me. god makes beginnings. ends are mans work. sin is our end. in the end when sin has conceived it brings fourth death. death of my favorite thruhikers thruhike. well,.. at least his blubber got killed. and his not being a thruhiker and wanting to be one is dead also. dead as well are his inhibitions about long distance hiking. and i belive his shyness, witch never searves anyone well, has passed. we say good by, farewell, avidazaine. goodnite.

Does anyone know Smitty's plans after he's done?

Would be kinda interesting to see him drop by Trashgiving in Glencliff but that might be a bit off the beaten track for him. Too bad, tho, as he's probably ready for some decent food, never mind the top-shelf hiker eye candy that traditionally frequents Billville-sponsored events.

We'll just have to get by without him.

Oh, and Smitty, if you see this before you get to Kent, congratulations in advance!

62 miles.

Where will he be summiting?

In about 6 days. I'm at a public library in Pittsfield, MA, FWIW. Parents fly out of here tomorrow. I'm back to full pack the rest of the way. Made it to the Shay Rebellion Memorial today.

Re the "has he had sex while on the AT???" curiousity... That is purely need-to-know info. That is, only someone possibly interested in sharing that with (and of interest to me that way) would need to, and thus get to, have that data.

Only seen anyone else on the AT on one of the last 5 or so days, if you don't count where the AT goes through a town.

It's 20* warmer in Sheffield, MA (52) this morning than it is in Georgia (32). Atleast it's not raining here! MS is going to be one soggy dog come the weekend!

It's been rainy while I've been hiking the last 2 days, as it was the day I went over Graylocke.

19 November is a great day to finish, Smitty.....

On 19 November 1493, Columbus discovered and explored Puerto Rico.

On 19 November 1620, the Mayflower Pilgrims discovered and explored
Cape Cod.

And on 19 Novemebr 1965, the fine folks at Kellogg first introduced the
Pop Tart.

Have a great last week, Smith!

Minnesota Smith......

I am thinking of you on your journey this week, your last few steps, and as Mother's Finest stated: your hike will end this week, but your perpetual journey will begin......

Even with all the indecisiveness posted here, I have also seen compassion, love and clear regard for a man who has not only educated us from his extraordinary ways, but has shown us that he has truly.....hiked his own hike.

Fishin Fred recently said to me that he was so overwhelmed by the love and
kindness he has been shown from the AT Community, how he has learned what unselfishness truly means. He asked, "Are people really like that? Is this for real?"....speaking of everyone he has met while hiking, on this site, and at hiker events. Yeah, this is it man. This is for real.

THIS thread is a TESTAMENT to the bond we have created here.

With that, I say Minnesota Smith and we here on Whiteblaze have closed another chapter of Appalachian Trail history.

Hike your last few steps in peace my brother, you did good. :sun

And on Nov. 19, 1606, the colonists organized by George Popham, camping at the mouth of what is now known as the Kennebec River, began to build a small boat with which to escape back to England, beginning a history of shipbuilding here that persists to this day.

And speaking of coincidences, it was on Nov. 19, 1962, or thereabouts, that I moved my then new bride into a ramshackled house with little plumbing -- not even a kitchen sink or a toilet -- and here we remain, 44 years later, despite an eminent domain taking by state highway crews, two major fires and a lot of work.

I'm not sure my wife would have met MS's high standards, but we managed to produce three kids and a batch of grandkids, far more than enough to violate my high environmental population standards, but somehow we have welcomed them one by one over the decades, nevertheless, suggesting, Smitty, that even less than perfect breeders may have useful attributes.

Mowgli,
I used to work for an outfit that treated utility poles in the ground. I was severely allergic to poison ivy and was almost always covered with it. One of my bosses gave ms some stuff that was called poison ivy extract. It was some holistic medicine that cantained a small controled amount of what ailed me. Anyway, I soon became much more tolerent of this pest and havent had it in over 10 years now. Of course getting rid of that crappy job helped...lol. But, with all the camping and hiking, i still should get it from time to time. You may want to google some holistic medicine site and see if you can find it, wish i still had some, i would just send it to you.

on this thread i belive there are more intelegent people and more good ideas than are found in all of washington. after all ,..its folks like benton makeey and earl and all of us who are the backbone of such a fine thing as the trail and its wonderfulness. i just thaught it needs to be said more often. this community weilds a great deal of intellegence and creativity. i am impressed by the deminer and maturity of the young involved in the trail such as treegirl and random. i admire the administraters and the hikers. this energy could be increased in my opinion. hiking can save your life. it does mine. and we probubly should spread the word that thruhiking is where its at. im feeling a drop off in trail intrest and an increase of trail abuse. idd like to see some pow wows become more often and more abundant , meeting to insite some new proposals as to use, and bringing the next generation to the trail as kids. and some controls administered to prevent the trashing. its a sorry thing when ridgerunners are needed. but id like to discuss the issue as im comming around to the opinion that we need to stop litter and water pollution now. im looking at this from a long life of watching the crappyness increase. ii really think there may be a dissconnect between the needs of the trail and the folks who want to help.

goodmorning smithisota minne. basicaly we have today, manyana, the day after manyana and then the end of matthewskis world will come crashing down. i wish minnesota smith would move to phily so i could annoy him constantly with trail talk. i can out trail talk most folks into the ground. each and every day i remind my friend chuck he should be out on the trail. and he allways says ,"i know".if chucks delivering a pizza and i ride by on the way to the hardware store, i yell,"worlds ending chuck! better get out to the trail!"and this has been going on since we were 17! i like to badger ,pester and make feel guilty anyone who hikes and isnt.i hate you ms for finnishing. go back and walk some more. watching you is better than tv!.dont come home. stay out there.we need you to keep hiking forever.
