Matthew, I just looked at the Greyhound site. They seem to go to Danbury, CT. Thats a lot closer to Kent than Bridgeport. From Danbury I think you can take the HART bus route #7 to New Milford. That would put you about 15 miles south of Kent.

If you look in the "Thru-hikers companion" they say that the Bonanza bus goes to Kent CT. Leaves out of NY city. About $30 one way. Take the train to NY grand central station then walk/taxie/subway the short distance to the bus depot.

"The best way to get bus information, routes, fares and schedules is to call Bonanza toll-free at 1-888-751-8800. The phone agents are efficient and helpful."

oops, never mind that was my old 2001 companion. The current online companion does not show bus service anymore. Sorry. My old companion shows the bus stopping in Kent at the "Fife & Drum Inn (860)927-3509.

Another option:
Take the Metro-North train out of NY city to Wingdale NY and then take a taxie the 9 miles to Kent CT.

good one skidmark! i totally laughed. now,..back to me,.......its about 8 hours of driving round trip im guessing. the bus is 5hr and 40 min witch includes a hour layover in port autharity. the exaust pit of the earth. so if you figure about 4 and a half hours bus time driving equals 3 hours or 3 and a half carwise. so if someone wants , ill pay you dammit! this threads members can come up with a launch to send matty to greet ms cant we? hell, miss janet shuttles this far. come get me janet! kidding. she would!

Matthew...great idea with the deaf sign.

I'm glad you and Steve are going to be there, I know MS will be happy to see you. You've done a lot in just one day's time-I'm impressed.

Next step is getting you guys from Philly to Harpers Ferry. Anyone feeling up to driving them? You know you're curious.

.....or....

Greyhound: Philly to Hagerstown MD, departs 9:45 a.m. arrives 3:10 p.m. Can you be there on Tuesday? Or.....a ride? We're really pushing it here I know. Last minute ideas

Is there anyone in Harpers Ferry vicinity that can pick these guys up at Hagerstown bus station, put them up for a night? If you could at least let them crash at your place, I'll pick them up in Hagerstown and deliver them to your doorstep.

We need to leave for Janet's morning of Wednesday Nov. 22. I have pies to bake at Janet's. Harpers Ferry to Erwin is 6-1/2 to 7 hours. Unless MS wants to stop for poached squid along the way....or a bride. Don't respond to that.

We'll be at Dots on Friday.

Miss Janet is discombobulated. We'll revive her once we've landed.

MedicineMan

Many many many times. I could start with the night in 1980 that I spent in a broom closet with my girlfriend (and ex-wife) after we missed the last bus home after a stellar Grateful Dead show at Nassau Coliseum. Front row I might add!

If I was in the area, I'd take you myself. I hope it works out.

http://mta.info/mnr/html/planning/schedules/pdf/HARLEM_%20M-F_corr.pdf

You can check the schedule and fare here too
http://as0.mta.info/mnr/schedules/sched_form.cfm

At most, it's $22 from GC to Harlem Valley-Wingdale (that's the name of the stop).

Wingdale to Kent is 8 and 2/3 miles. Hold a $20 out and you should get picked up easy.

As you walk out of town towards the trailhead, just before the school athletic field on the right, there is a trail on the right that climbs up to a level grassy area. It is blue-blazed. I've camped there several times.

If Mr. Smith is going to camp at the Stewart Hollow Brook Lean-to on Saturday night (which is seven miles north of the Rt. 341 trail crossing .8 mile west of Kent), I would suggest another option to Mr. Mweinstone for his meeting Mr. Smith on Saturday.

Have your ride take you up to Cornwall Bridge, CT instead of Kent.

Ask to be dropped off on the north side of the bridge (junction of Rt. 4 and 7 - there is a gas station there).

Walk up Rt. 4 about .6 of a mile to the AT crossing. Turn right into a beautiful hemlock grove above a ravine - great camping spot right there.

Since this spot is 4.1 miles north of Mr. Smith's Saturday destination, you can rest/relax from your long trip until he comes along.

Happy trails!

Matt,

There once was a spiritual man who found himself in a horrendous rainstorm. The fireman came pounding on his door to get him out of his house.

"No, I will stay here. The Lord will protect and save me."

He stayed in the house. As the water flooded the 1st and 2nd floors, he climbed on the roof. A neighbor floated by in a boat, offering to float him to safety.

"No, I will stay here. The Lord will protect and save me."

As he was clinging to the chimney, a helicopter spotted him and sent down a ladder.

"No!", he shouted, "I will stay here. The Lord will protect and save me."

The water rushed over the chimney, he drowned, and came face to face with the Lord.

"Lord, why did you forsake me?"

"FORSAKE YOU? I SENT YOU A HELICOPTER, A BOAT, AND A FIRETRUCK!"

Take the train. If it's on time, it may get you there by nine;).

I'm sure Warren's information is right on the money. After all, when it comes to familiarity with campsites that are located conveniently close to roadsides and vehicles, he probably is the Trail's supreme authority.

MS phoned - he's at Riga Shelter - rained 3" last night, bag dry, wet tent.

36 miles left of CT, a woman is slacking him the rest of the way.

He said if you come now, you'll have to stay at Maria McCabe's in Salisbury. He's glad you didn't leave yet.

He will finish on Monday or Tuesday, hopefully Monday.

He stated after first 10 miles the rest is easy.

He would be honored to have Matthewski finish with him.

His cell phone battery was extremely low. He said the shelter didn't have electricity :D

For those who may care, Tri-County Corner is still where I'd last seen it. A good time was had by about 25 AHC and BMECC members and our guests as we celebrated the day when BMECC began clearing the A.T. between the Susquehanna and Lehigh Rivers 80 years ago.

Harry Rentschler, Danny Hoch, Mayor Shannaman and those who climbed with them to Tri-County Corner in 1926 didn't make it, but I expect they would have were they still living and able to share the experience with us today.

I thought I might read something about some hiking in Connecticut upon my return. Perhaps there will be something on that subject later.

They seem to be very good friends in a Felix and Oscar kind of way. As Tank says, they will hike the last 15.9 miles into Kent tomorrow.

As indicated, MS is very much aware of everything going on in the world. He is disappointed that the Democrats and Republicans are still in power. Oh well?

By the way, MS really does eat dried squid, which he insisted I try. Looks like bait, smells like bait, tastes like bait. I may be wrong, but I think it's bait.

I think The Thread is just getting started.

I'm sure that will spark enough controversry to keep the thread going for a long time. I'm sure we will easily hit 200,000 "views"..

Whatever happened to the good old 203 area code? The world is surely going to hell.

I guess it's been a really long time since you've been to CT. The 203 area code is only for Fairfield and New Haven Counties. They changed the area code for most of the rest of the state about ten years ago.

I find MW's commentaries/opinions far more informative and entertaining than MS's. I suspect when MS does come back "on line" it will just be more of the same. It's now a race against time. I spoke to BackCountry Outfitters in Kent earlier today. The "bench" has been moved inside to the footware department, and the store closes at 6:00. MS may fail to summit today by 30 feet. Can you imagine looking thru the locked front door at "The Bench"?

I wasn't aware that the store was on the Trail.

In fact, it's close to a mile OFF the Trail.

So why should Smitty's failure to get to a bench in a store interfere with his finishing up?

He should have that drink when he hits Rt. 341 and finishes his last section.

In any case, congratulate him when he does arrive. Some of us are quite proud of him.

Jack: You're right. The bench is a symbolic finish point only. The folks at the outfitter agreed to put it outside again for MS. They will however probably take it back in at 6:00.

MS,
i took my time time when i started out too. don't listen no the naysayers. i went to the hospital in dahlonega (sp?) and went back to the trail after a three day break. i hiked probably 6 or 8 miles a day when i started. and i finished too. it's a mental/physical game for about a month, then it's all mental from there. so take your time see the sites. i've battled with you several times here on WB and i can't say that i would ever want to hike with you but i wanted to let you know that i think you'll make it. keep walking cause that's all it is, is walking. keep posting and i'll meet you in maine with some trail magic. good luck.

Hello friends.....

Matthewski phoned and handed the phone over to Minnesota Smith at 7:30 p.m. Monday night. MS stated he had completed his thru hike.

As I have said before, this man has definitely hiked his own hike. You gotta love it.

He asked me to post a message here for him, but it's very detailed and I think he should post it himself, which he'll probably do so when we reach Janet's tomorrow. It's rather trail sentimental.

Matty and MS are getting a ride to Harpers Ferry WV, and in the morning I will pick them both up for a beautiful drive down Skyline Drive. We'll hit the interstate and be at Janet's around 7-ish.

I'll post a report on Janet's Thanksgiving thread on this trip....it's been real nice, and have so many wonderful photos to share with all of you. Photos won't be up until NEXT week. (Where will I put the video though? Get busy ATTroll :D )

We are going up to Dots on Friday evening, 6pm-ish if any of you would like to share a thought or spirits. :sun

The helpfulness and intrinsic goodness of so many Trail people I interacted with along my way were a significant factor in completing this undertaking. (I will definitely make exceptions for the trail designers in PA, NH, and ME!) BTW, anyone in the area CT/MA wanting to get some taste of what NH and southern ME are like in terms of climbs (not the mud, it's not 4' deep there as required or anything) should go to the north side of Bear Mtn and the ascent just north of River Road. Very much looking forward to seeing many fellow members of my trail family in the next few days.

Matthewski and I are about to go find some more food while waiting patiently and gratefully for Tank to pick us up to take us to Harper's.

Back when I can arrange it.
