Flying in from east coast was lil rough as it was 3AM ECT when made it to the Hard Rock in SLT. I stayed at HR before and after my hike which worked out well as they held my suitcase so I could head straight to Houston for work meeting after my hike. Needless to say I wasn’t up as early as hoped. I walked across the street and got on the $2 bus to the South Kingsbury Grade Trail Head. Made it to TRT by about 1PM which is off a 1/2 mile side trail. At this point you either walk north or south....I chose south as others recommended...I resupplied 3 times because I had to get my desolation permit after about 40 miles which worked out well as it gave me the opportunity to shed some cold weather gear as it wasn’t nearly as cold as expected. Second resupply was 50 miles later in Tahoe city where I stayed the night then off for the last 80+ miles. Overall it was a great trip with amazing scenery! The hammock worked out well for the entire trail. Desolation was beautiful as I had a full moon and walked most of it in the moonlight....Only section I hated was the 20 miles north out of Tahoe city as I felt like I was hiking a mountain bike pump track. All the riders were very friendly it jut takes away from the hike dealing with bikes and dust. I started around 1pm Saturday September 22 and finished yesterday September 30 around 3pm lil over 8 days. I highly enjoyed it even after hiking JMT previously.

Last pic definitely not the TRT. I've seen that TRT tree pic many times.I have two of my own. I haven't grown tired of it. TU for sharing. Really cool ridge hiking along the top of fins IF you can get up there in Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce, Zion, Monument Valley, Sedona, etc. It can make for easier faster travel. No H20 for the most part though. Cowboying up there under a clear dark sky feels like a front row seat at the Hayden Planetarium winter or fall presentations. Yahoo. The seed is planted.

Moonlight Desolation Wilderness. Awesome! I feel ya

Forgot to mention I had a visitor for dinner...lil after dark I had just set up my hammock and sat down to eat my favorite trail meal....the famous Skurka beans and rice with cheddar and Fritos...cold soaked. I heard a noise so I put the high beam on the headlamp and a bear was starting at me about 75 yards away.....a few choice words and he walked on....needless to say I didn’t sleep well that night, and yes I hung a bear bag most nights.

Glad you had a great trip with no issues. There is some rain coming in the middle of the week, so you missed it.

Congratulations, Salty! I've been section hiking that trail for 2 years and still have 50 miles to go!
Hey I lost the trail in a couple places, and am curious about your experience.
One was after climbing the hill on the other side of Star Lake. The trail seemed to disappear somewhere up there...
Another was in the vicinity of Washoe overlook on the left, Diamond Peak Ski lift on the right. A little before there, I recall getting to an area with a bunch of huge boulders, and kinda lost the trail there also. How bout you - did you have any trouble with either of those? Doesn't sound like it. Sounds like you just breezed on thru, but I just thought I'd check...

Thanks.....I’m a firm believer in the guthook app for this reason...I always double check with it if I have ANY doubt! I did screw up at the huge boulder that goes near the houses by N kingsbury but quickly saw my mistake after looking at app.

me too, and guthook did get me back on track in both cases.
Still, tho, even with guthook, I sometimes seem to "run out of trail" occasionally. Guthook will say the trail is straight ahead, but there may be a bunch of boulders in front of me with no apparent trail. or 2 or 3 trails branching off, and difficult to tell which one is right. Of course, you don't have to go very far, to know if you're going the wrong way...

if I recall the Boulder you're talking about, if you screw up, it takes you back to the parking lot .. or, maybe that's not it...
