Don't sleep in shelters. From Trail Journals . com:

http://trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=124575

"Worst night sleep ever. I woke up so many times. It was soooo friggin' cold. Every time the wind blew I felt it through my bag. Andrew peed though a hole in the floor, second story, two times and out the window once. I too went out the window. Andrew wanted to leave early the next day because his piss landed all over the entrance. "

Remind me to tent at Springer. Yuck.

That has got to be the longest LW entry, EVER!Sorry. My post was confusing. L. Wolf didn't post it, nor was that his journal entry.

The journal entry was by Messenger, and Andrew is Braveheart.

I only mentioned L. Wolf in the title because he is always saying not to sleep in shelters.

I'd edit the original post, but I am one of many cheap-o members who has yet to donate. So this will have to do. Sorry.

Braveheart? How brave can you be if you can't face a little cold to empty your bladder?

Shelters become more hospitable after one passes Virginia.

I still avoid them unless it is raining or I am robustly lazy.

Yup. Shelters totally suck. I will not use one ever again. One of the last times I used one I went out in the rain and set up a tent. Baltimore Jack was there. He can tell the story.

lol, that is why i have a pee jar when it is cold. Just take it with me the next day and dump it somewhere appropriate. 34 years of camping and no spills yet, knock on wood.

I'm glad Madame and I hike during the fall and winter so we w'ont have to follow behind folk who are so poorly trained they urinate in their sleeping quarters, slovenly behavior indeed. You see,we actually enjoy shelters and try to keep them clean for the next guest.

I've slept in shelters the last 5 nights, and hardly heard a mouse (maybe one confirmed night with mice). Only saw 1 fly and 2 gnats once at Hawk Mtn.; too cold for the vermin, I suppose.;)

FYI, I'm in the Hiker Hostel in Dahlonega tonight. On to Woods Hole tomorrow.

sleep in shelters and know the risk, sleep on the ground if you like, or swing from a tree in a hammock...........it doesn't matter, just hike your own hike and have your own experience.............

I think the funny part is that they have edited all mention of the "peeing incident" out of thier guestbook. Brave indeed.

Pack size is pretty hefty too. Braveheart just posted again on his trail journal. Still in Helen. I'm reminded of a nickname I once heard: "Death by Cotton."

.

From the Feb 18 entry, of the same journal:

"...started going hotel to hotel seeing if we could work for our stay - no dice. I had the idea of making a sign that said, "AT hiker - Need $ 4 Room". I was able to get $49.00. "

Gee thanks fellows, this does wonders for hikers' image with the general public, especially in a town (Helen GA) that is not really hiking oriented:( Maybe you should be a little more prepared next time.
