Hey ya'll! I'm pretty new to this website (and I think it's great) so I don't know if this question has already come up somewhere else or not. I know that everyone needs a trail name and from what I've read it sounds like most of those are chosen before you start to hike, but how do you go about thinking up a name? I want something relatively original but I don't have a clue what it should be. So I guess my question is how did ya'll get yours and what are some ways to help me with mine? Thanks a lot!

Don't overthink the trail name thing. Just hit the trail and wait for it to come to you. I can't even remember what name I came up for myself before I started my first hike... but it certainly wasn't anything like "Lump". However, after a particularly tough day of ups and downs (Rollercoaster section in Northern Va), I developed this huge mysterious lump behind my knee. That same day, my friend (who had previously named himself "Boss") twisted his knee pretty badly. As we were hiking him out to the road to go to the hospital, I joked with him that his trail name should be "Limp"... and he replied that mine should be "Lump". I've been Lump ever since.

The bottom line is that a trail name should mean something to you... not just be some clever thing you came up with before you took a step on the trail. Just my $.02.

-Lump

Yes this has come up many time before. But it is sometimes good to bring it to the surface again. There may be some users that never posted in the other threads. So from time to time it seems this gets brought up.

Here are some other threads that discuss this.

Your best bet is to just be Jesse till your trail name finds you. And it will find you sooner or later.

I remember a kid who called himself "Windwalker", but he looked a bit like the kid with the glasses on Rocky and Bullwinkle. After about a month of calling himself Windwalker while everyone else called him "tootsie-pop" he finally gave up and accepted the inevitable...

JesterCK,

Why not get brave and let the people on this site, or some of your friends, come up with a trail name for you? Tell us a little more about yourself and I bet the creativity will begin to flow. For example, how about: "DonutHole", because you "do not know" what trail name you want. I know that is bad, but just an example. Then, you can choose one of the suggestions if you like it, or just laugh at all the dumb ideas!!!

P.S. Keep it nice!!!!!
