I'm looking at hiking the LakeshoreTrail in GSMNP from Fontana Dam to Bryson City next week with another member of WB. Anyone know where we can safely leave a car for 3-4 days in Bryson City?

Jeff,
I just called a friend up there and am waiting a call back. You could look up the music store there and ask then if you can use the little lot next to them.

When we went, we parked at the tunnel for 6 days with no problems.

Just make sure you don't have a "stop the road" bumper sticker.

haha

Thanks Amigo.

How many miles is the Lakeshore Trail Nate? I have some books at home, but am in the office.

Tim:

36 miles according to the book "Trekking the Southern Appalachians" by Igelman & Hadden. A great book by Mountaineers Book. It was on the shelf behind me all along.

Yeah, too bad you don't have off. I'll post a trip report. If not here, in a blog.

when are your start/end dates? I could try to get in on it, but it's not likely. The main reason is I don't have a lot of winter sleeping gear. So I would probably FREEZE!

March 1-4 is looking pretty solid.

Why not leave it at Deep Creek Ranger Station?

I hiked the Lakeshore Trail a couple of years ago, but i went the other direction so my car could be left at Fontana Dam. i just felt like it was safer there than at the tunnel. NECKBONE.

How far is the Ranger Station from the tunnel?

Less than a 10-15 minute ride.

EDIT:
Depending on when you wanted to go from Deep Creek to the Tunnel I could help you out.

C'mon down! I talked to your friend, and he convinced me to park at the tunnel. But now I'm getting cold feet. Hike Inn wants $65 to shuttle us to the tunnell if we stay there Wednesday. Too rich for my blood. We'll figure it out.
