Hey all!
Thinking about doing the Connecticut section right after Easter. Any insight on expected trail conditions for that timeframe?

The trails should be fine, although probably muddy in places depending on the weather in the few days before your hike. It's a great time to be out on that section.

Thanks Old Grouse! Any must see shelters, or shelters/camping areas to avoid?

Ten Mile Hill shelter is pleasant enough. Mtn. Algo shelter is 300 yards from the road, I once had a problem with some partying 16 yr olds. The spots north of Kent, along the river and prior to Pine Swamp Shelter fill up and are close to roads. Between Pine Swamp and Falls Village there are many stealth spots. If you get a spot at Mt. Riga shelter, take it.... the sunrise is lovely!

10 mile is nice when the fireflies come out in the little meadow out front. Also Silverhill campsite can be very pleasant.

Expect temperatures to be in the mid-50s at lower elevations, though there can be variances. Expect some mud in poor drainage areas along the trail in CT, and perhaps some inconvenient ice as you climb up into the Riga Plateau, especially on northern exposures that can take a while to completely thaw out. It's been a cold, wet few months with slow melting.

Keep in mind CT requires camping only in designated areas and no campfires (unless you are in a state park with fire rings). Most of the trail traverses private lands and some owners and associations are very sensitive to their conditions of use agreements with the AMC, so be sure to stay where you should. Most of the camping areas are good, great view from the Riga shelter, which would be in my pick book to stay.

In warm/good weather conditions, weekends that time of year can bring scout troops and school groups out to the trail, especially between Lions Head and Sages Ravine on Friday and Saturday nights. Though scouts typically stay in the group camping areas, other groups having less experience may crowd into shelters depending on numbers. That said, its rare to see these groups on weekdays during April into early May.

Its a nice time of year to be on the AT in CT, have a great time!
