My Hiking boots are too large.

Foot size is 12 1/4 and using a 12 kills my feet.

So up to a 13 as I could not find a 12 1/2 boot. I use high ankle boots - bad left foot - needs protection.

So I went to REI and they sold me larger socks.
Well my feet are still moving about in the boots.

Has anyone used a shot toe filler?

This is the site I am looking at.

Any thoughts or help in this????

Length isnt what allows foot to move around. Roomy toes is a good thing.

Most boots are pretty wide, its preconceived that you will wear thick socks. At least in my experience

Might need to try different narrower boot.

Your footwear is most important item. Happiness there is mandatory to enjoy yourself.

Superfeet and Montrail/Columbia and other companies make different volume inserts. I use the Montrails, they are heat moldable. I have the high volume and the low volume that I mix and match The key is if the gap between the lacing holes gets too tight and your foot slides forward then there is not a lot of options. I have very wide feet so on occasion I have to buy size 14 to get the width instead os 13 EEEE. My foot will tend to slide forward and my heel moves around in the back of the boot. I have had to make a tapered pad and glue it under the tongue of the boot to hold my foot back in the heel and open up the lacing gap. I cut the pad with a bandsaw off a slab of neoprene foam, but since I do not use the factory inserts I have plenty of spares that I can cut up. I use a belt sander to taper the foam.

Once upon a time i added a second flat insole under the molded insole in some shoes. Took up volume.. added significant cushioning as well.

I use this, works very well, but sticks to socks sometimes.

My wife has crazy narrow low volume feet. Got some 3mm cork and cut insoles to fit under the foot beds, as per MuddyWaters. Cost almost nothing plus a few minutes effort. Try it.

Perhaps REI is not the place for you.

Consider;
Sasquatch Shoe Source
Yeti Shoe and Boot Emporium
Bigfoot Bootery and Bodega

Sometimes using different lacing patterns to stop your foot from moving around can provide a good solution. There are patterns designed to hold the heel in place and/or stop forward/backward slide in the shoe itself.

Are you talking about after several miles of hiking or for just everyday use? I wear a larger size hiking shoe than my everyday shoes because my feet will swell somewhat after several miles of hiking. You might be different, but from what I have heard from many other backpackers, this is common. If you haven't yet, you might try hiking in them and see how "loose" they are afterwards.

This.

My most comfortable hiking boots are almost ridiculously large for my feet...at home. After spending 12 or more hours hiking in them, they fit and feel fine. I have worn the "correct" size in the past, and my feet were positively screaming sore.

However I do not go as large when I wear trail runners, since they tend to be more likely to swell with my feet anyway. I also use a "heel lock" lacing technique when I wear those.

Brand and model would be helpful.
I wear size 8 1/2 dress shoes.
I wear size 9 1/2 foot gear on the trail. Size 9 gives me blisters.
My current favorite trail shoes are labeled 10 1/2 on the box. Go figure.
Don’t go by the numbers. Go by the fit.

I disagree. REI is the perfect place to buy hiking footwear.
I put several months use on a pair of trail runners. One day in Colorado I got black toenails. Shoes too short.
REI replaced them with a 1/2 size larger pair.
I don’t know of another company who would do that.

Try different volume after market foot beds, different lacing techniques using elastic laces, and different volume socks to make up that small amt of volume.

https://www.theinsolestore.com/sole-custom-insoles.html I use thick, med and thin beds to tweak interior shoe volume as well as foot support(high arches for me and desiring a more solid heel cup lock)and insulating from the cold.

Before lacing up and tightening make sure the heel of the foot is set all the way to the interior heel of the shoe.

Indeed, feet swell. Feet are larger by up to one shoe size at the end of the day compared to when first getting out of bed. I buy and size for shoes in the evening for this reason. Day after day of backpacking with wt on one's back swells feet too. I use these to allow for expanding foot volumes. https://www.locklaces.com/

Thank you.

But these are laces without the ability to go under the edge of the boot.

I'll try again today and get back to you on what happens.
