and a few decades ago there were no ATM's, no cellphones, fewer trailheads (w/minimarkets), no powerbars & goo, no silnylon or polyanything, no ultralight and folks hiked the trails. "How did they survive with all that weight and so many days out with no resupply?"
It was what it was. I suspect the locals were a huge help to our hiker predecessors.
.....Now I'll guess the # of shelters, 20 years ago, was about 60% of what it is today? I am anywhere close?

Compared to 30 years ago, I'm not convinced that there appreciably more. Some of the older ones have been removed, many replaced, and new ones have tended to be positioned with better spacing, near water, and away from roads.
