View Full Version : How avaliable is Isobutane along the trail
My thru-hiking group is considering taking a MSR pocket rocket as a second stove on our hike and I was wondering how avaliable it would be on the trail. Any additional insight about stove fuel along the trail would be appreciated.

I saw a lot of people spending a lot of time searching for fuels along the trail. Some had it mailed, probably illegally. Some spent a bunch of time off the trail looking. A lot of folks using the alcohol stoves were trying to use rubbing alcohol which has water in it and thus is a very poor fuel. Do a little research on places along the trail that does carry fuel and plan accordingly.

Use wood...no need to send $$$ to big oil for isobutane.

Yea, I've been using a Sierra Zip woodburner for years. Took it on my 96 thru-hike, never had a single problem. Boiled all the water and grilled or cooked all the food I wanted.

I used a pocket rocket and had no trouble. The jetboil canisters work as well and the MSR ones. (Once I did buy some offbrand blue one that didn't fit) Any outfitter will have canisters. Check the article as recommended by Jeff.
