I liked the streams in VT. They more often than not had large pools in them that one could swim in and cool off at the end of a long day.

catfish pond is north of sunfish pond, its the lake camp mohican is on
Just past Dennis Cove road.....take a left at the 5th blaze.

in front of cooper stream lean-to in maine is nice if the bugs arent bad.

just south of the kennebeck river in maine is one of the greatest swimming holes i've ever seen. huge waterfalls, nice big pool. the edge of the trail drops straight down, but there's a rope for you to lower yourself down with. when i'm there, i always spend the entire day taking it easy at that spot.
I think we need to define "swimming hole." People would say, there's a great "swimming hole" on Jennings Creek or at such & such a place. And then you get there, and the water ain't even up to your waist.
To me, a swimming hole is at least up to your neck, or preferably deeper.
The best swimming holes I found were in Maine. Pond after wonderful pond.
I agree with The Goat. It is unfortunate how many northbounders bypass those little spur trails to some of the most beautiful scenery in the region. Those swimming holes & waterfalls are so inviting. But northbounders are just zooming down the trail to catch the Kennebec Ferry ride after lolligagging around Harrison's Pierce Pond Camp gorging on red, white & blue pancakes! A matter of fact, I think an easy ideal family hike is to park on 201 in Caratunk and just hike up to Pierce Pond. Stay overnight at Harrison's Camp and then the next day just hike back out. Between the canoe ferry rides, the waterfalls, swimming holes, the food at the camp. This is one of the best beginner hikes to introduce youngsters to the AT experience. Bring the family. If you have time to extend the weekend, drive up to the Forks and visit Moxie Falls, and take a kayak ride down the Kennebec.
Solemates: Cooper Spring is also a top notch swimming hole. Many thru-hikers stop here on their Hundred Mile Wilderness experience. So the pool on a warm summer evening can actually get crowded.

Hey gotta mention Little Rock Pond in Vermont. Is there a more idyllic place to swim anywhere? easy to get to, unspoiled and clean and surrounded by forests.

crescent pond in ME is pretty money.
nuclear lake in NY is a nice swim too.

The ones I recall that I liked the most, Jones Falls mile 389.6, Laurel Falls at mile 410.5, Dismal Falls mile 599.7, Upper Goose pond mile 1534.7, Clarendon Gorge mile 1669.4 and just about every pond and fjord in Maine. I enjoy the water so trust me on my choices. If there was water, my a*s was normally in it. WB
