The new sleeping bag I bought doesn't fit in the backpack in the stuff sack it came with. It's a 20 liter stuff sack but it's 17" wide and doesn't fit into my daughter's bag. Take it back or don't use the sack since I'm using a compactor bag anyway?

Finally found a thread that answered my question. Sorry.

Usually you can just go with that stuff sack and stuff the thing in the bottom of the pack without issue? Haven't heard of that being an issue!

I nearly always swap up stuff sacks. This comes from the days of external packs when I needed a sturdier stuff sack and would line it with a garbage back for waterproofing. Now I'll pick a stuff sack that fits my pack and cram the sleeping bag into it. You do what works for you.
