Oh yay. Yeah, a loss. But geez, what an ugly piece of trash in the wilderness. I thought it was ugly, albeit kinda novel, in 1990 (yes before Chris McCandless). I can only imagine it now.

I am very much in two minds about this.

It was litter, glad to see it go. Unfortunately, the woods are full of them.

Removed because two people died hiking to it over the last several years. More people die hiking the AT each year.

Removed for two deaths, and the expense and risk to the people who are obliged to rescue the ill prepared tourists who try to visit. Read the book, the bus was in a dangerous location.

I have read the book, and saw the movie.
As far as rescues, how many hikers are rescued from the AT each year?

I hope they restore the bus to its condition when McCandless used it and put the bus in a place where people can see it.

Remember the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark when Belluch shows Jones his worthless watch and discusses bearing it for a thousand years making it priceless?

When does litter in the wilderness turn into a cultural monument? How was this bus dangerous? Will the bus be relocated to a visitor center someplace?

Removed because two people died hiking to it over the last several years. More people die hiking the AT each year.
Two people died and how many dozen rescues that were successful?

. . .I hope they restore the bus to its condition when McCandless used it and put the bus in a place where people can see it.

That's the plan. The bus will be more accessible to more interested people without the associated dangers. And, as far as restoring . . . crap, it was a scary pig sty the year before McCandless was there, so "restoration" shouldn't be too difficult.

It is ironic that if McCandless had been rescued liked some of the tourists have been who came to see the bus, nobody would have ever heard of him and nobody would care about the bus.

And, if Krakauer didn't choose this story to write a book about it wouldn't have been an issue either. So, I guess that means the bus is only important because of the author, not so much the subject. Hmm.

It will add nicely to Isoar State Park.

Attractive Nuisance
{However, legally speaking, the term only applies to "children"}

Don't give'em any ideas!!

That being said, the summit of Denali would be more expensive and time consuming to remove . . . and, it's not nearly as ugly as that bus.

Perfectly good hunting/backpacking shelter gone. No more an eye soar than most any other shelter... In a not so dangerous location compared to most other backwoods locations in the state....

Stupid tourists and Nanny's.

Stupid tourists usually only kill themselves.

It's the Nannies I really don't like....

Or they could charge a $375 "special use fee" like they do for mountaineering at denali. Would pay for some tourist sar
