Found: 1999 thomas knob shelter log

A friend sent me this tattered journal from Thomas Knob Shelter with scores of entries from April to August 1999. Written in the front is the following:

I did a little poking around and I'm having trouble finding anyone by that name living in Laramie now. Does anyone know Matt? Should I just mail this to the address and trust the universe?

Geeze, I thought this was going to be about a log that was part of the shelter. My mind went all kinds of places with trying to figure out how someone identified a log from 1999, and why that would be important.

Maybe the ATC could help you find that individual.

I would possibly mail a letter to the address confirming if they still live there first. If he does, and he calls you then you could mail the log. Otherwise it may just get thrown away.

It looks like this residence is an apartment....Apartment dwellers often do not stay for 21+ years....

It's a shelter log from Thomas Knob? If so, I would recommend inquiring about sending it to the Mt. Rogers AT Club (http://mratc.pbworks.com/w/page/8862374/FrontPage) or the ATC. Although I am unsure of what club and ATC policy is on archiving these, shelter logs are pieces of pieces of AT history. Which, come to think of it, I wonder of the AT Museum collects these?

The AT museum has an online section with old shelter registers. I am sure they would welcome it.

The A.T. Museum has a collection of shelter registers and very much welcomes new additions. (The Appalachian Trail Conservancy entrusted their collection to the museum and sends along any received to the museum.)

I would suggest sending a photocopy to the person who left the register and the original to the A.T. Museum, as these have so much value in documenting not only the culture of the Trail, but trail conditions, weather conditions, trail/shelter visitation, and any number of things of interest. They provide a fascinating and unique snapshot in time.
