Hello Gang,

Will be heading for a week long hike north starting at Springer Mt. this weekend. Assuming we start around 10am, we should probably be at Hawk Mountain by early afternoon. Not sure we want to hike all the way to Gooch Shelter the first day and was wondering if there are spots available between Hawk and Gooch.

Thanks Greatly,

You will find plenty of space to camp. Its a very reasonable walk to Gooch and if you prefer there are some tenting options just before gooch shelter with a spring

There are established sites 100 yds north of Justus Creek and plenty of other campsites along the trail. Most notably on top of Sassafras Mtn, Horse Gap, and Cooper Gap. But this is GA so you can pitch a tent or hang a hammock anywhere. There is no natural water between Hawk Shelter and Justus Creek. However, the Army Rangers often (but not always) keep a water buffalo at Cooper Gap that hikers can use.

Have a great hike!

I cannot recommend camping at Horse Gap. There is room for just about two tents on a little level spot by the fire ring there. Otherwise, you'll be pitching on uneven ground. Devil's Kitchen, just up the trail in the NB direction from Justus Creek, would be a good spot. If you're in a hammock, you'd be pretty good just about anywhere...
